Alsa Kernel 2.6.7 Hiss

Hello,

I have "successfully" compiled my new kernel. But when I try to play MP3 using XMMS. I just hear a hissing sound. ( hiiiisssssssssssssssssssss ). When I also do "cat name_of_mp3_file.mp3 > /dev/dsp , I still hear the hissing sound. I compiled
"Sound Card Support" and ALL under ALSA as modules ( except "OSS Sequence API" which cant be compiled as a module ). Help Me !

Thanks

All looks ok doesn't it?! Sorry, not sure what to suggest. I have an onboard cmedia sndcard on my box too but I don't use it 'cos my basic soundblaster works better. I had to use oss drivers on the 2.4.24 kernel to get it to work :~[

Now what ? I recompiled the kernel and compiled "Sound Card Support" into the kernel. But when I boot to the newly compiled kernel. B00m ! Blank Screen ! What happened ? There is NO disk activity. Numlock is ON and ALT CTRL DEL won't restart my PC. Seems like bad luck likes me.

does ctrl+alt+F6 work? are you familiar with the kernel setup you have? sometimes you get no display if you do not comiple the vesa framebuffer into your kernel.
edit: ctrl+alt+del is normally disabled by commenting out a line in /etc/inittab, or has it completely crashed?

I "vga=normal" in the lilo.conf and it's alright now. Problem left is the ALSA noise problem. Sort of "Static Noise". It's like the sound of the TV when I go to channel 0

As a last resort I would suggest using the oss driver. They do the same thing anyway!

In short, yes but not noticeably to end users. Here's an informative link.
Note: It was written before 2.6 kernel

d00msweek, you should compile your kernel with sound support but not select ALSA or OSS, instead download alsa-driver and compile them as (that's independant from your kernel compilation) modules. It's better to do that way so you can keep easily up-to-date with ALSA versions without touching the kernel.
Also KDE (it's arts daemon) was known to have some troubles with sounds (at least that happened to me with the default version)

I've tried the command "cat filename.mp3 > /dev/dsp" before when I tried to get my soundcard working, and when it did work correctly that command just gave static. Try something like "mpg321 filename.mp3"
