Alien Bob's Excellent Contributions to Slackware (Discussion)

Hi.
I say it once again: I really appreciate Alien's work, and I use on daily work his packages (I'm using Slack64-current-multilib). But once again confirm: Alien's packages aren't official just the way they aren't supported by Slackware Team. Ok, Eric is one of the team, but he shares his private work in his packages (so they are tagged as "allien"). When You use his packages on stable version of Slackware and something broke in the consequence of using this tools/libraries/whatever, so who You're going to ask about support?
I know, that making third party packages is very important job for future releases, because of evolution in programming. I am ignorant, but not as much
Cheers

LQ Slackware forum is the official site. Post your problems here. I'm not going to defend Alien_Bob(Eric), I'm sure he will respond.
You need to know that Alien_Bob developed x86_64 concurrent with the x86_32.
You really don't know a thing about the way packages, contributions or anything about the team by making poor statements as you have made.
Alien_Bob maintains separate SlackBuilds for the means of isolation for development. Most packages that are finally placed into final are still in flux in one way or another. Always evolving! SlackBuilds itself is nothing more than a repository;
Quote:
excerpt from SlackBuilds;
The SlackBuilds.org project is maintained by a small group of people, but we want the scripts in our repository to be representative of the entire Slackware user community. There's no way that the few of us can possibly write scripts for all of the extra applications that users want to have, so we depend on YOU to help us out. If there's some application that you use, and we don't have it in our repository already, please consider writing a build script for it and submitting it to us for possible inclusion

I feel confident whenever using any of the Slackware Teams packages. Occasional errors but those too can be addressed via team member or members here on the Slackware forum when one has a problem that cannot be solved alone. Again: LQ Slackware forum is the official forum site, ask here!

I have no problems for now and if I have, they aren't involved with Slackware itself ;P It was just a theoretical question which You misunderstood, probably.

I know that, that Eric was the coordinator of the x86_64 tree of Slackware, but he wasn't the only one developer in the SlackTeam... But I may be wrong - Eric will know better

Ok, maybe I know nothing... I'm not an alpha-n-omega But ie. multilib packages from Alien aren't included in Slackware64 official tree and they will not be included in the future. So You can't tell, that _all_ packages from Alien are official (note that I will not mention anything about their quality and stability!). Patrick had explained this already, right?

But until they aren't placed in official tree, are they official?

I know it, Garry. But LQ is a public forum, which was designed for everyone, not just for experts. Yes, you can expect expert answers, but most responses are from other members who might be met with the same problem and managed to solve it.
And in this way works OpenSource: share your work with others who, in turn, help you improve your code, remove errors, improve and add other stuff, and Your work evolves.

You should have stated as such!

I never said a thing about the multilib. I don't know if multilib will ever be available officially. PV will have the say so. I am not going to argue with a misinformed member.

Again, PV will decide that.

No, LQ is a moderated forum. As for the latter, that is why it's called a forum. Member involvement is encouraged therefore balanced communication(s) thus shared knowledge and experiences.

Now we are discussing OpenSource? Where are you coming from for this as related to the discussion about Slackware?
This discussion should not be carried on. The topic(s) are getting varied thus drifting all over the place.
<mod>If you want to discuss this then I do suggest that a separate thread should be created. I will report this and see what happens </mod>

Whatever You say...
You're right. This discussion is useless for this topic and also by means deviate too much from. Let's end this senseless quarrel that to do anything and so is not useful.
I'm pretty sure, in a sense we both are right, but perhaps because of my poor knowledge of the language, we can not agree
So, give me five and lets go to the bar (why there is no beer smilie? ).

I never said the discussion was useless but that it should not be carried on within the thread as it was way off topic. It is not senseless! You made statements that were not serving the Slackware community or for that matter LQ.
It's good to intelligently discuss or debate a subject.
If it is a language problem then things should be ironed out so that everyone understands their positions. By abstaining, at some point this issue will arise again.
Your sense & understanding is different than mine for Slackware. Partly due to the language barriers. But information for Slackware & forum support is out there for everyone to read.
Alien_Bob(Eric) as a team member has made loads of contributions to Slackware & LQ community. Not just his Slackware packages but his continued openness by participating interactively with members here on LQ and via his blog. He is not the only team member who interacts here at LQ. Occasionally PV will post & I'm sure lurks to get the feel of what's going on since LQ Slackware is the Official forum.

I have a nice parsi fish recipe too, maybe I'll post that so you can truely say "thanks for all the fish".
Tomorrow I will prepare a lasagna with my son.
That looks like I should try it. And a new stable release after many months, just when I am reading the site!

the secret of good lasagnas, in my opinion, is a lot of handmade besciamella (I won't add so much nutmeg and no pepper at all).
here I like to prepare green lasagnas with pesto alla genovese, a few boiled potatoes, besciamella and some stracchino
