Yeah quite a lot of people are making the same statement. Did my sites today + studioware.org. Robbie Workman's is also blacked out, as is noobfarm and the other slackadelic sites.

I am not making a statement. The owners of the server I host my blog and wiki on live in the US and decided that all web sites on the server should be blacked out. I just wish they had added a click-through to the real web sites.

I do not live in the US, and aalthough I sympathize with the ideas behind the blackout, the US is just another country in a bigger world. It is a pity that the effect of the actions to convince the US senate has repercussions for people in other countries with governments that care more about their people and less about their own pockets.
But that's the Internet for you... be glad that Google cache still works.

I agree that if this passes then problems will get worse for the USA;
Here is the U.S. Congress posing a restricting bill for the Internet and this same Congress(DEM/Republican) cannot even pass laws to control our borders. This bill gives more power to DOJ. This is like having the fox guard the chicken house.
DOJ cannot even control the department, how are they going to control the Internet. Create another useless leg as 'Department Of Internet Regulation/Pollution'. We will need to borrow more money to support another bureaucracy.

I can see controlling the transfer or pirating of intellectual rights as an issue. But at what cost? There are so many ways to secure and when done it is just a matter of time before someone that has been challenged then code is broken. Or someone places content that is copyrighted thus violation of laws. On and on we go!

More users should be aware the Internet is a world community resource! Everyone wants convenience! Morals. ethics and civic responsibility are at risk whenever you place something out in the open. Someone will take it & abuse. Normally for financial gain at someone Else's expense.

How does it work now? If you register a domain in the UK or any other country (using companies from that particular country), does it ultimately in some way have to go through some organisation from the US (eg. ICANN)? In other words, does the US ultimately control the interwebs? If that's the case, how would it be possible to get independent from them?

This is something I've been wondering as well. Couldn't everyone just move their domain hosting from American companies to European companies and then tell the bodies enforcing SOPA in America to jump in a lake?

It's a little bit like Team America: Internet Police.

All it needs is an independent set of root name servers that is not US-controlled. For instance, http://public-root.com/ but there are others, particularly in the AS/Pacific region where influence of the US is felt as restrictive. If the US tightens the noose, the rest of the world will just cut the rope.

At this moment in time, the USA is at the pivot point. They really stand a chance of being marginalized if their political body sells out to this ridiculous anti "piracy" lobby. The US will soon cease to be a leading country, the population but also their politicians are becoming more and more self-absorbed and sectarian.

China's already got the Great Firewall. From where I sit, some in the US want in on the firewall action.

Our government is completely out of control.

The internet is about the only thing that still works in an organic & efficient manner. If these boobs get a hold of it, you watch how fast that changes.
