Someone should have told me! :}

For weeks I've been trying to find
the script that sets the few initial aliases
that you get on a bash-prompt only to
find TODAY that they come from the
dircolors-binary ;}

put alias ls='ls --color' in your ~/.bashrc create it if it doesnt exist.

I use the following,
alias ll="ls -al --color"
alias l="ls -l --color"
