agetty process?

there are numerous agetty processes, 5, running on my box and I dont know what program uses it? I am only using xchat, fluxbox, gaim and mozilla?

When I try to kill an agetty process, another one props up? how can I kill all of them? What is agetty for? I read the man page but it still is confusing

Smokey you can change if you want to load less agetty in /etc/inittab if you want. It's not bad to have them and they don't take too much mem loaded.
