Again, about ATI Radeon 9200 SE
 
Hello all,
Recently, I bought a Gigabyte Radeon 9200 SE powered by ATI, with TV out, and installed it. Under XP works fine, sends signals to TV etc.
Under Linux I have some problems.
I run Slack 10.0, kernel 2.4.26, and no ideea (for now) about version of xorg. The X server didn't start (I know, I should give here the error echo but...).
Seeing that I've downloaded ATI driver for XFree86 4.3.0.

(my hardware is as follows: M/B Gigabyte GA7 VAXP - ultra, Gigabyte Radeon 9200 SE powered by ATI - AGP port, Philips 170c5BS TFT monitor and a TV - new model, 100MHZ)

I did this (following instruction of "ATI Radeon Linux How-To" by Peter Gracar - http://www.rage3d.com/content/articles/atilinuxhowto/) :

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
Character devices /dev/apgart - enabled
Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 DRI support) - disabled
Processor type and family MTRR - enabled
Kernel hacking kernel debugging - disabled

I've installed ATI driver following the steps

1. cd into directory containing the drivers you just downloaded
2. rpm2tgz fglrx****.rpm
3. installpkg fglrx****.tgz
4. cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
5. sh make.sh
6. cd ..
7. sh make_install.sh
8. fglrxconfig

The fglrxconfig command goes like this:

External AGPGART module:

It is possible (but not recommended) to turn off the usage of
built-in agp support of the provided fglrx kernel module and
use the external AGP GART module (agpgart.o) of the Linux kernel.
If you want to use the external module then ensure that it loads
prior to the drivers full startup. In order to manually load the
external agpgart module execute this on the commandline (as root):
/sbin/insmod agpgart
or alternatively configure your system to auto load the module.

AGP Locked User Pages

The grafics driver is able to read and write textures and bitmaps trough AGP
mapped and locked views of the main memory for the application's mem space.
Performing those mapping task depends on several successfull interaction steps
with the Linux kernel. A failure in this process might lead to some messages
in the kernel log. If these kernel functions are failing silently or in case
of other heavy incompatibility (e.g. a new kernel memory manger) then there
is a high chance that the system will hang as soon as the graphics adpater
wants to read from assumed but nor really mapped memory location.

If you do see that the advanced fgl_glxgears application halts your session
whilst the simple glxgears does run nicely then please disable this feature.

If you do see lots of notifications about failed kernel calls for mem locking
then please disable this feature and re-check the kernel message log.

TLS Method: *** this only applys to the FireGL workstation boards ***

The grafics driver supports two different methods of thread local storage.
The first method is fast but might immediately abort when used with
WineX, VM emulators or some other advanced programming tools.
The second method is up to 10% slower in a few rendering cases
but does nicely cope with any sort of exotic software.

For more details on this topic, please see the readme.

If not totally sure about your needs, then please select "0 - default".

0 - default (FireGL workstation boards: fast)

The X started despite the message that don't find screen :0

And NO TV out. In fact there is some signal but the image on TV is scrambled

Can anyone help me or tell me what to read for getting TVout working ?
Did I do something wrong ?

And you do need the commercial driver of ATI, because it sucks

hi there,

to start....does hw-acceleration actually work ?
type " $glxinfo " to check.
and " $glxgears " to look at the framerate (fps )

and for the TV-out.....maybe best to post the xorg.conf file you are using.

furthermore i always make agp-support modular and not compiled-in.
i don't know if that's needed though....

Unfortunately, these days I was busy: no time to test neither to answer, hope this evening ... My local time is 14:28, 10 Jan

SlackerLX -> What about ISaX? How do you snatched SuSE config file ? From where, because I don't have SuSE on my machine ...
egag -> neither glxinfo nor fglrxinfo returned any info (I ran them from console - no X). In fact, the echo was something like this: couldn't start screen :0 - I am very sorry I haven't redirect error to a file for posting here ... I'll do this tonight ...

hi again,

- all those " glx...." command are meant to see if the driver is working correct.
in textmode that driver isn't even running. you have to use them in X.

-i saw you compiled in agp-support ; i would keep that modular
also compile dri-support as a module.
you can get hw.- acceleration in 2 ways : use the ati-driver ( and not load the dri-module ) or use the radeon-driver with the dri-module.

-first get your driver working properly, then check/enable tv-out .

Hello there Iulian_B!
I was also very busy at work for two days and when I came home and opened evolution, Inbox exploded with 30 messages.
But anyway, I do not have the SuSe either. I HAD suse before, where I snatched the 3D configuration from. It works great on both Slackware and Debian.
