After XFCE 4.10 upgrade in -current , no longer any video thumbnail :

Hi ,

As a XFCE user , I really enjoy the upgrade to 4.10 in -current , Thanks team !
Anyway , in the process I lost the video thumbnails in Thunar .
It was working fine with the previous installed version of XFCE/Thunar (4.6 not 4.8).

I don't know if thunar-thumbnailers is still relevant or not .

It seems there's no tumbler-ffmpeg-thumbnailer.so in /usr/lib64/tumbler-1/plugins .
It means tumbler will use gstreamer only ?

Could you tell me if you have the same problem ?

(latest alien ffmpeg package is installed and latest ffmpeg-thumbnailer is compiled and installed too)

Thanks

I suspect you're seeing this: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8208

Well ,I'm not sure as I usually don't use Thunar for files copy/move (Midnight Commander) .
I don't know if they have problem to get thumbnails in this bug report , and the problem is permanent on my side , not just when copying multiple files .

Anyway , from your answer , I understand it's working fine on you side .

As I remember making a lot of change on my system to make it work with previous version of Thunar/XFCE and as I need to migrate my Slackware partition from HDD to SDD , I think it's time for me to make a new clean install of Slackware -current .

Thanks for taking time to reply and for the great work.

Well, I won't go so far as to say "it's working fine" here, at least not with respect to that bug. I've not personally encountered that bug, but I don't do very much file management stuff outside a terminal...

Ifog,

By 'thumbnails' do you mean the standard blue film-reel icon, or actual thumbnails of video stills?

If you mean the latter, I'd be interested to find out if you can get it working again, as I didn't know this could happen. In my experience I've only ever seen the blue film-reel for videos, and the reduced-size thumbnails for images, before and after the update to 4.10.

(this could very well be a symptom of my own noobiness, but I'd like to know how to get this working as much as you do)

Yes , I'm talking about real video thumbnails .
In fact , thumbnails are the only reason for me to use sometime a graphical file manager .
I'm way more productive with Midnight Commander for anything else .

It was working fine before with oldest version of Thunar (I think by using thunarthumbnailer + ffmpegthumbnailer) .
The new version of Thunar seems to use Tumbler to achieve this result and Tumbler can use ffmpegthumbnailer or gstreamer to create video thumbnails.
The provided Tumbler in Slackware current only use Gstreamer .
If I'm wrong , tell me

I think Dolphin (KDE) use mplayerthumb and it works fine (but slow) .

It may interesting to know if other peoples get the video thumbnails in Thunar or not with Slackware -current right now .

Not an answer. Sorry. Just wanted to note: Same here.
Thunar does display thumbnails if they already exist
(i.e. If I go into KDE and load Dolphin and have it
show previews...then the thumbnail displays in thunar).

A quick update here .
I tried to recompil/reinstall everything (Tumbler , ffmpegthumbnailer , etc) but with no progress as I still can't get any preview thumbnails for video files in Thunar with XFCE 4.10 .
I'm really interested to know if everybody has the same problem (with latest Slackware 14 Prerelease) or if it's just a problem on my system ?

Thanks

I don't have many videos, but non of the ones I have generate thumbnails. I don't really care though. I like the film-reel icon.

I think video thumbnails will require ffmpeg, which we don't ship (and probably won't due to patent issues).

Yes , I use Alien ffmpeg package .
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/ffmpeg/
In fact , I don't know if video thumbnail would work in KDE/Dolphin without this ffmpeg package ?

For Thunar , it was working fine with previous XFCE provided (4.6) .
I never tested with XFCE 4.8 .
Maybe the problem is related to Gstreamer ..

You might need to do more on your recompile. I have not researched this completely, but my guess is that you'd need to compile, in order, ffmpeg, ffmpegthumbnailer, tumbler, then thunar. Something along those lines. Perhaps gstreamer as well.

I might give this a try in the next day or two if I can find the time.

Well , I didn't try to recompil Thunar , so I will try this too.

Quick update :
I solved the problem

1- A conflict between /usr/lib64/pkgconfig and /usr/lib/pkgconfig was preventing tumbler configure to detect ffmpegthumbnailer => recompil, reinstall tumbler with ffmpegthumbnailer and gtreamer support .
2- Recompil , reinstall full gstreamer ie gstreamer , gstreamer-plugins* ,etc

Don't know if it's using gstreamer or ffmpegthumbnailer but it work fine now (faster than was it was with XFCE 4.6 ) .

Thanks
