After updating to current, sound module not loading.

I'm having a go at Slackware, after last using it some 10 years ago (version 2-ish) as my introduction to linux :D. My my, how the baby has grown ;). I must say I'm quite impressed with it so far, giving it a good shakedown now, having to seriously consider if I want to continue on with the "Debian way" (looking forward to the chaos in testing/unstable after release lol!), or come back to the roots. I'm following shilo's guide, which is very good, and the reason I decided to revisit Slack. So far I cruised through the initial install, installing dropline (oooooh drool), and used swaret to update to current. Now, before I updated with swaret, I ran alsaconf, and it smoothly detected and setup my sound card (Santa Cruz Turtle Beach - cs46xx), and I was very happy with the sound performance. After the update using swaret, it is not loading the module, says something to the effect of can't find the snd-cs46xx file, if I knew which file that was logged in I could get the exact error. It's late, I'm burned out and ready for bed. Anything sound familiar? Any clues? I can post any file content needed... in the morning hehe. I appreciate any help offered. I was getting real enthused about Slackware, but this minor setback dampened it a tiny bit, not much, but I'm tired hehe. Looking forward to another day, and hopefully an easy fix. Maybe I just need to start with upgrading my kernel first? It's running 2.4.29 (I think.. foggy). Just weird to me that it would stop working like that.

Maybe you upgraded the alsa-driver package that contains the alsa sound modules for the kernel.
You can revert back to the original alsa-driver package that comes with the cd or compile yourself the alsa drivers.

You can take a look at this thread I made sometime ago where I describe the problem: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=235122

If this is your problem just add alsa packages to swaret's exclude list.

In my experience I've noticed that when doing "CURRENT" upgrading (besides causing me headaches) the CURRENT sound drivers are made for the CURRENT kernel.

So if you upgraded your sound, you'd have to upgrade your kernel (which IMHO the 2.4 really isn't an upgrade, the 2.6.10 on the 2nd disk..now thats an upgrade, but that doesn't work with CURRENT upgrading scheme....blah back to subject)

OR you could just set swaret.conf to "10"( or is it "10.0"?) instead of CURRENT and then just "upgrade alsa" or "reinstall alsa" or "get alsa" then "install alsa" one of those should do it

OR you could just reinstall the alsa from your disk/iso/magic goat card inface/foo (whatever you used to install )

hope that made sense.

Yes, alsa in current is compiled against the 2.4.30 kernel.
You need to fetch the kernel ide/modules/headers packages manually from one of the mirrors, ugradpkg AND RUN LILO.
After reboot, as root, run alsaconf, alsamixer and then alsactl store

It looks like you hit it right on the mark as far as the kernel version, it appears the files are in the 2.4.30 dir. Hmm. Ok, I had planned a kernel upgrade for today anyway, so I'll get through that and work from there. I just didn't want to proceed if something was borked otherwise, but that's cool, as whatever kernel I use I'll have to take the appropriate steps to get that going anyways.. I'll get back later on with how it worked out. Thanks guys, that was a major help :)!

Oh, btw, is there anything I should know in the way of gotchas that I should look out for as far as using the latests kernel, ie.. could you expand a bit more on what was said about using 2.6.1x against using the current upgrade in swaret?

If you use the 2.6.x kernel, then you need the alsa driver compiled for that kernel (I think that it is also in testing?). You then need to exclude alsa from swaret or slapt-get as they will replace the 2.6.x version with 2.4.30 and later 2.4.30 versions.

I think that the Slackware 2.6.x kernel does not include ReiserFS support, which you are likely to be using with 10.1
