Though later the attacks were shown to be fabricated lies, Kerry's choice was to "not wrestle with a pig" and "take the high road" lending the attacks no credibility...in theory.

However that he didn't fight them at all hurt him very badly by keeping them around longer and creating doubt. He should have at least mentioned them and defended himself if not demonstrating his leadership by squashing it and possibly indicting the liars. Instead it looked like weakness to allow unsubstantiated claims go unquestioned, unopposed. They could easily have been sued for Libel and Defamation of Character and he would have appeared strong and decisive and standing tall for Truth. Instead he showed he is not a fighter and it was part of what killed his chances.

If you want a citation here is one SwiftBoat Affair
Finally I understood what's going on in last 3 pages of this thread. Thanks enorbet and in my opinion your point is valid.

Note: don't hurt John Kerry, his son-in-law is an Iranian.

Do your homework on both the individuals mentioned and you "should" come to the same conclusion.
I was a U.S. Marine who had recently left active duty when those two were pulling their publicity "stunts" and thought them nothing short of traitorous. Time has not changed my mind.
Sorry that this is in this thread, but couldn't find a way to contact you elsewhere. Just want to say to you, cwizardone Welcome Home friend, welcome home.

enorbet, after me explicitly asking for this thread to get back on topic your very next post is off-topic. I've suspended your posting privileges for 12 hours in an effort to allow this thread to get back on track. Richard Cranium, Personal attacks are not acceptable at LQ.

Many years ago, Linux and gcc were more "cottage businesses", and not that many people were seriously working on them. At that time, sticking with tried and true versions was careful and wise.

I remember for example Slackware sticking with kernel 2.4 in 2.6 days, or many developers using their trusted gcc 2.95 well in 3.x and even early 4.x days.

I think that Blancamolinos' feeling may relate to this.

Today, things have changed a lot. Linux and gcc are serious industries. Lots and lots of people are involved directly or indirectly, and paid full-time. There are extensive test suites, stronger QA and release processes.

In addition, security which used to be a side concern is now paramount. Security fixes are developed and deployed much more quickly.

It means that today, the safest, wisest approach is to keep close to the last releases, not to stick with old tried and true stuff.

So I find it rather comforting and wise to see Slackware moving to kernel 4.4 and gcc 5.3.

Over the 14.2 development cycle I've taken the opportunity to evaluate several operating systems. I've taken Debian, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, openSUSE, Arch, and Ubuntu for extended test drives. It is safe to say that most operating systems have strengths and deficits. After 12 years of running Slackware I feel comfortable and at home with my favorite operating system. I have no plans to leave Slackware.
To the OP: I think it is a good idea to try out other operating systems. When I evaluate another OS I am reminded of why Slackware is the best fit for my needs. Each to his/her own. Live and let live.

After 23 years it is not a bad idea to abandon any distribution. Before every routine is hard coded in the brain finally. Other than that the off-topics of this thread make the better topics in my opinion.

It's good to see that, however isolated, there exist people who are still sane.

I think the notion of propagation of tobacco consumption in your statement seems somewhat negligent or even irresponsible.

*Morgan Freeman voice*

23 years. Gives a man plenty time to think. This and that, among other things. Like the good man said once, "Get busy livin' and get busy Slackin'."

We've all tried plenty of distros, but only one we keep coming back to over and over for the same reasons...
