I've just recently completed a fresh install of Slackware 12.1 on one of my computers. However, I am having troubles adjusting the font sizes for various applications, such as FIrefox and VLC Media Player. Even though I have adjusted the font size from the KDE Control Center, the font size in the menu bar of both the aforementioned applications is larger than what I would like it to be, despite of what I have set KDE to render for the system. I adjusted the font size in Firefox under the Edit > Preferences menu, but this did not seem to make a difference. Is there something that I am missing with the font configuration?

Upon further research, it seems that the application fonts for programs such as Firefox do not respond to changes made within the KDE Control Center, but do so for GNOME. Since I do not have GNOME installed, is there any other way to change the application fonts for programs under KDE?

I tried that, but it makes no difference for the menu fonts in Firefox. Also, this is, as I mentioned, for the application fonts for other programs as well. I am not certain how to go about adjusting the application font itself for programs in KDE. I believe that it is based upon various GTK-based programs based upon what I have read so far.

I think the only way to do that is to make a ~/.gtkrc-2.0.mine file with some good font parameters. Search the forums for .gtkrc -- there was a very recent thread detailing this very issue.

It does just what you mentioned with GTK-based applications. However, I am still having font rendering issue with Firefox, no matter what I have set the Edit > Preferences > Content > Fonts & Colors to. These changes seem to only reflect the fonts size and type within the browser window, and not for the font parameters within the file menu of Firefox itself. This is the area I am having trouble with still.

The issue I am having is similar to that of another user on this forum with Firefox, which is represented by the following screenshot at this link:

Basically, the menu options in Firefox (File, Edit, View, etc.), as well as the font size in the address bar, are still larger than what I would like them to be, regardless of what I have in either of my .gtkrc.mine or gtkrc-2.0 files in my home directory. These appear to work for other GTK-based applications, but still nothing for Firefox.

A nice small program to set up the appearance of GTK-based programs without fiddling with gtkrc-2.0 is gtk-chtheme.

Adjust the fonts in gnome or xfce first. Then when you're in KDE, have gnome-settings-daemon or xfce-mcs-manager running in the background.

You might want to change your DPI settings. Type 'about:config' in firefox's address bar and search for 'dpi'. Set it to something between 75 and 100 and restart firefox. On the other hand it might be a good idea to explicitly set your physical monitor dimensions in xorg.conf if it's not recognized correctly at startup.
