Acroread- "Pango-WARNING" All charactors within application are boxes

Im running slackware64 with the multilib's installed and after installing adobe reader when I start it up It spits out:

Code:
root@mainbox:/home/steven/install# acroread
dirname: missing operand
Try `dirname --help' for more information.

(acroread:26918): Pango-CRITICAL **: No modules found:
No builtin or dynamically loaded modules were found.
PangoFc will not work correctly.
This probably means there was an error in the creation of:
  '/etc/pango/pango.modules'
You should create this file by running:
  pango-querymodules > '/etc/pango/pango.modules'

(acroread:26918): Pango-WARNING **: failed to find shape engine, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderFc', script='latin'

(acroread:26918): Pango-WARNING **: failed to find shape engine, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderFc', script='common'
The actual application runs fine and I can open and read/navigate pdf's but it seems like I don't have the fonts or something installed that are needed for the application because all the characters that are in the application it self are boxes like if you went to a Chinese website and you didn't have that font set installed. I have run
Code:
pango-querymodules > '/etc/pango/pango.modules'
which didn't appear to do anything. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

sorry for the question, have you tried running it as normal user (not root)?
are you using a package for slackware ? like this? or just the installer?

I installed Acrobat Reader 9.1.3 by downloading AdbeRdr9.1.3-1_i486linux_enu.tar.bz2 and running the included "INSTALL" script on my fully up-to-date Slackware64 13.0 with my own multilib stuff installed on top.

It works. No errors. I get the Adobe license agreement upon running "acroread" andthen the main Reader window. I can also open (big) PDF documents and read them without problems. I checked the Reader binary "/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread" and that is indeed a 32bit binary, so it definitely needs a multilib Slackware64.

The pango errors you are getting can be caused by either not having rebooted after installing the -compat32 packages (rc.M will generate pango module information for the 32bit libraries you've just installed) or by not having a 100% correct set of rc scripts (this can happen when you have been upgrading slackware64-current for a while but have failed to use the *.new files that are installed sometimes into /etc/rc.d/).
