acer C7 chromebook

Hello forum..

I recently got the impulse of buying a manufacturer refurbished unit from ebay (129 us $) which i'm using atm.

I was wondering if someone has successfully installed slackware on this chromebook or if i'll be the first one to report trying to do something like it.

I'll wait for your feedback.

I personally have not, but I know I've read of some of people running it.

But will maybe give you a idea on what to expect before Timothy posts back with a Slackware Install How To, (if there is one even on the web. Maybe, Maybe Not)

I can't find anything directly relevant anymore, but I know I've read it. Required some work to do. Everything I remember reading dissuaded me from trying, too much work to get a real OS on it.

kernel-P4N1C 08-24-2013 08:17 AM

well..
according to what i've read/saw, i have 3 options...

1. developer mode and crouton. This is a script that allows you to run a real linux in chroot... most of the tutorials are for the chrome pixel but well see.

2. developer mode and dual boot. apparently the way to go. As this chromebook has a hard drive, it could be done on the hdd or using an external usb storage.

3. custom bios and do the hell i want... almost no documentation here.

as far as i understand, the problem with this machine is the bios: or at last that's why people can't install windows on it. I think i read or saw something about someone running windows7 on it but can't find it either.

ok..
I'm stubborn so I WILL install slackware on this crappy thing.

this seems like a good work around. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_C7_Chromebook

I'll report as soon as i have something to show. Also, there is a google group about flashing the bios of this machine (which will solve everything) but i'm not sure/confident on flashing coreboot without detailed instructions for this specific model.

let me know what you think.

I like a good story. Especially detailed ones. I used to tell stories myself.

well

chromebooks bios are uefi and locked. on developer mode, the bios is unlocked; but the machine is only capable of booting chromeos kernel... or at least that's what i'm understanding.

since this is an x86 architecture, i'm supposed to install strait from tarballs here; and that's where it gets interesting. I'll have to load chromeos kernel to read a rootfs with the installer etc.. and i don't know how to do that yet.

the second option will be running slack as chroot. I kinda like that idea... either way, there is a ton of reading in front of me in order to do this... and as usual, i'm lacking the time.

It seems not dificult.. however, not elegant.

Need a little help guys...

I managed to boot my C7 from a usb key with slackware... The process is simple, but a pain in the ass.
Basically you copy using dd the chromeOS kernel and put it on the usb drive.. on a second partition load the rootFS and that's it.

the system booted and loaded slackware; but on single user mode. I have no idea what else to do. Please advice.

rokytnji 08-31-2013 09:38 PM

Since nobody answered

Code:

telinit 3
for command line user mode

or

Code:

telinit 5
might work, might not.

kernel-P4N1C 08-31-2013 10:45 PM

Well

I managed to get it working. Happens that my /etc/fstab was wrong.... i changed that and BAM.. slackware 14.0 up and running..

here is my blog post on howto doit http://www.bloggingdabullshit.com/20...hromebook.html
