A series of n00b questions

Alright, I'm not at slack so the questions may be a little off so here I go:

So after I got Slack running and I'm loading up gnome, it just quits claiming it's missing files...So, what I'd want to do instead is install fluxbox but being a newb I don't know how to get it from a disc...

(keep in mind I can only do this from shell)
What would be the command(s) for this?

Root@darkstar: tar -xzvf /dev/fd0/fluxbox-0.0.12.tar.gz???

Anyways, I lost my train of thought and forgot the other question so I guess this is it...

Thanks in advance

Welcome to LQ, Joel.

Basically, yes. Firstly, the floppy would need to be mounted (mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy) and then I would advise that you copy the file over from the floppy to the harddisk (cp /mnt/floppy/fluxbox-0.0.12.tar.gz . will copy it to your current location). You then need to untargz it. I usually use tar zxpvf filename.tar.gz but yours will work just as well (z for gz file, x to extract, p to keep permissions, v to show what's happening, f to use the following file). Once this is done, you'll probably be presented with a dir like fluxbox-0.0.12, in which case you'll want to move into that dir and take a look around (cd dirname and ls). There will be a file called README and probably another called INSTALL. Read them both. If the INSTALL file starts off with 'These are generic instructions', then you can assume that to install you'll need to do the following, but you should still read the files anyway!
  • ./configure
  • make
  • su root
  • type root's password
  • make install
  • exit
And there you have it. Providing nothing went wrong, you should now have Fluxbox installed. To get it running, you'll need to edit a file in your home directory called .xinitrc. If you search these forums with xinitrc as the search criteria, you should get some good example of this file. One question though, what files does Gnome claim to be missin? They could also be vital to Fluxbox... don't know yet though, depends on the files.

Good luck.
