I was able to get the lastest ATI drivers to install after using a 2.6 patch. My FPS went from 120 to 290 on this old 9800pro. This is without DRM enabled. I am going to recompile with it and see if I can get a better frame rate.

First off the guide is for stock kernels, not bleeding edge. The driver's from what I understand do not work with your kernel version. Secondly, you didnt read my long thread , you don't use that method any more to install the driver's. You simply use the 32 bit installer now, just be sure that you have the line in the fstab. Keep it simple at first, just use a stock slack kernel, get it working they up your kernel is the best way IMO.

I was able to get the drivers installed with the installer. I had to uncomment something in xorg.conf. Now I get 2800 fps in glxgears.

The problems im having is 3d acceleration is still grayed out? any suggestions. Im hesitant to change in the xorg.conf because im not proficient enough with x server in case I cant start x again. I tried installing the intel drivers from there site but that just a whole nother confusing mess. Im definitely gonna be steering away from video onboard and pcie that doesnt have great support for linux.

3d Acceleration IS working.

Direct Rendering: Yes

And if it wasn't, your glxgears would be MUCH lower.

What "3D Acceleration" is greyed out?

OK...A few quick questions for everybody:

How out of date is this thread?

Does it still fulfill the needs for which it was intended?

Does the information provided still work?

I'm asking because, as of late, I haven't really had the time to read through the forums like I used to and update things.

Any responses can be helpful

You can add that the latest ati driver which supports r2** chipsets is 8.28.8. All newers won't, because ati dropped support. And, btw, it requires xorg <=7.1 However, there is some binary blob hexing fix which is against ati license. And, i think, kernel should be <= 2.6.17

Now thats absolutely weird! weird numbers. i hve no idea what to do. although my frame rate stays between 380 to 430...once it went to 480, my movies play well full screen(except for real media)

Also, my lsmod shows i810_rng -- (unused)
why is that? please please help me!!
maybe if i solve the prob il be able to watch rmvb better on real player. if the sound sometimes does not play (automatically), the video plays fine(without any jerks) but if sound also comes(which i dont know why it goes off sometimes in the first place) then the video is real jerky!! and so i have to switch over to windows to watch the episodes of Scrubs..hehe. HELP ME PLEASE. i will be really grateful.
thank you
kind regards

Well....

What card?
What Slackware version?
What kernel?

All rather important questions, I believe...

hey all!

First I'd like to compliment you guys on this thread - sure is a good resource! I've read on until page 15 - then I jumped to the end to post.

I've read you guys saying you get much more FPS's than me. I get around 2000 FPS. Anyway I'd like to know if that's the best I can get or not.

I'm running Slackware 11, kernel 2.6.20 and my card is a GeForce FX 5500 (256Mb). Some code:

Code:
gtl@omicron:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
gtl@omicron:~$
AGPGART is neither statically linked in the kernel nor built as module.

I get the following:
Code:
gtl@omicron:~$ less /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Disabled

AGP initialization failed, please check the ouput
of the 'dmesg' command and/or your system log file
for additional information on this problem.
dmesg (edited):
Code:
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9755 Mon Feb 26 23:21:15 PST 2007
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9755 Mon Feb 26 23:21:15 PST 2007
glxgears (some stuff running in background, but this should be more, shouldn't it?):
Code:
gtl@omicron:~$ glxgears
10014 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2002.708 FPS
9912 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1982.293 FPS
10219 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2043.762 FPS
10074 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2014.719 FPS
10075 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2014.954 FPS
9899 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1979.712 FPS
and, finally, xorg.conf (edited):
Code:
Section "Device"

    VideoRam 262144
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
    Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NvAGP" "1"
EndSection
I haven't changed the Identifier value.

Any thoughts or hints will be apreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I get 5000 with fx5700.

Load these:
Code:
Section "Module"
    Load "dbe"
    Load "extmod"
    Load "type1"
    Load "freetype"
    Load "glx"
EndSection
and this is my nvidia section:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName "GeForce FX 5700"
EndSection
Do not know what this NvAGP does.

There was improvement, very little, though.

NvAGP is nVidia's built-in AGP driver. Usage (for driver 1.0-9755) detailed here.

I'm using older driver 1-0-9746. Never needed these.
Code:
22314 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4454.019 FPS
27726 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5530.131 FPS
26731 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5330.527 FPS
25180 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5005.972 FPS
20392 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4078.392 FPS
24599 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4911.571 FPS
