Question A full Slackware distro on a USB drive

Hello,

I once booted Slackware from USB and did installation from there. But, I was just wondering, can we have a full Slackware installation on USB? I mean as if the USB was a hard disk? Will I be able to use KDE (or some other lightweight window manager) and keep my configurations, e.g. network, personal config files ... ?

What do you think? Has anyone tried this before?

Alien Bob already has this done. You can either have a live boot that doesn't save any changes (a "fresh install" on every boot), or you can enable persistence and allow you to install programs and make changes that will be saved and survive across reboots.

I have installed Slackware to a USB stick in the past. It works well. Try it and see for yourself

I hate to use the word 'best', because we know best is subjective, but Porteus is, imho, the 'best' slackware based distro which is principally intended to be installed to and run from a usb data stick or usb drive.

http://www.porteus.org/

You mileage, of course, may vary - but Porteus has never yet let me down.

Porteus is a pretty decent Live OS. Its bootup speed is achived by heavy modification of Slackware's startup stage and a modified kernel.

However, the OP asked about carrying Slackware on a USB stick.
The crucial part of your reply is "slackware based distro". Porteus is not Slackware. Bugs experienced on Porteus can not by default be attributed to Slackware. Issues with your Porteus installation can not be discussed on this forum.

Thanks for the response guys.

I am not surprised Eric has a solution all prepared. This is great. It even takes care of UEFI. I am very grateful.

Long live Slackware.

Thanks alien, I think I understand that persistence will in the future with other release of the project, am I right? Last thing, I downloaded the iso file xfce 700M can you give me the complete list of packages to be installed on the XFCE version to make it totally complete?

Incorrect. Yous stopped reading after the initial announcement (http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/slackware-live-edition/ was posted exactly 6 months ago)? I wrote 11 posts after that initial announcement, describing the features that were getting added. Persistence being among those.

Actually the stable 1.0 release of liveslak was released two days ago and it is feature-complete. Read the docs: http://docs.slackware.com/slackware:liveslak

I should provide you with a package list to make your system complete? Do your homework please.
Also, it would defeat the purpose of a stripped version of Slackware if you bloat it with packages again to make it "complete". If you want a complete system, download one of the other ISO images - those are in fact "complete".

maybe I have not well understood the proceedings. I created the iso of small XFCE version with the command:
Code:
./iso2usb.sh -i path-of-live-current.iso -o / dev / sdb -c 30% -C 3000M
the process it creates number three partitions (sdb1 fat16 bios boot partition of 1M, sdb2 fat32 EFI system partion 100M,and sdb3 EXT4 Slackware linux 7,19G), but when I restart the computer, the system will not start, as if the USB pen is not read. Where am I wrong?
what I need is to create the persistence of at least 3GIGA, having a USB pen to 8giga

If I create the iso with the command "dd" (dd if=path-of-iso of=/dev/sdx) the USB pen is read without problems and slackware system it is started, but obviously in this case i not have persistence

I'd say the same thing about Slax (https://www.slax.org/)

EDIT: 10 seconds into the Porteus FAQ, I see that it started from Slax. Go figure.

Face it, there is no substitute for the best. And now that Eric has made it live nothing can even compare.
