Right 1st things 1st, i am still a n00b so be gentle! I'm moving to Slack from Mandrake ive formatted the drive and its gooin to Dual boot with XP from the same HDD now i have 15Gb for XPness and its already installed and a 2nd partition for Linux of bout 100Gb right ive heard i need to setup the partitions manually so what would u reccomend i do to the 100Gb partition wise???
also i couldnt get my 5button mouse workin in Mandrake is it possible for Hells Own optical 5 button mouse to work fully?
and i have a Gullimot Fortissimo II or summat along tho lines sound card with optical digital output to my hifi is there any wya of getting that to work???
How much memory (RAM) do you have? My rule of thumb (I heard this from somewhere else) is that you should have 1 partition whose size is roughly double the amount of memory you have. Thats your swap partition. Then you just need to make a linux partition of whatever is left over. That's it. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for your other question.
I too am a transitioning Mandrake user. Especially after the 9.2 fiasco. As far as partitions go I usually make a swap about the same as my ram (I have 1.5gig). On my 36gig SCSI drive it really is not a problem. Then a root and home partitions. Since most of the personal stuff goes in home, make it big enough. Thing is, if you use Winex from Transgaming for games, it puts each game in your home directory. So make it big enough.
also do i need all 4 Slack CD's? ive got the first 2 well still getting the 2nd but the 3rd & 4th are source so do i need them? or are they all the packages?
If you have a look at the slackware book (available at the website or on the CD's if you have them) you'll find a discussion of partitioning.
The short of it is that you can come up with any partitioning scheme you like but what's recommended is a swap partition (two or three times the size of your RAM), a boot partition for your os (4 or 5Gb is plenty) and then use the rest for data and non-distro software in one or more partitions.
As for the hardware, do a google search for "linux hardware compatability". There's a web page out there somewhere that lists all that stuff. You might want to do the same search for XFree86.
u dont need the 3rd and 4th, unless u intend to play around with the source, or manually compile packages...... not sure bout the sound...... mouse, no idea.....
