A couple slackware problems

I recently moved from Red Hat to slackware, just to try something new. I currently have two problems that i need to solve:

1. I cannot get internet or network connectivity. I connect through my linksys pci network card, through a hub, and into a cable modem. I ran the netconfig, am using DHCP, but nothing. Also when I do an lsmod it shows tulip as "used 0 by [unused]".

2. I need to setup dual boot, using the windows bootloader. My linux partition is on /dev/hdf2, and when using red hat I did a

dd if=/dev/hdf2 of=/fat-c/boot.lnx bs=512 count=1

to give windows a boot file to load linux, where /fat-c is the mount location of my windows drive. However now when i select linux at the windows boot menu it will not load. I am not sure if I even have lilo configured correctly yet, but i know I do NOT want the boot loader in the MBR or else windows will have a fit.

So anyways any suggestions at all would be quite helpful. Thanks.

Is the information for the output file correct for Slack?

not sure, Im thinking that the procedure is pretty standard for most versions of linux. I think maybe the problem is that slackware has Lilo in a different location. I'm pretty sure that the boot.lnx file just points to Lilo, but im really unsure.

1. In RH or win do you get your IP from your hub, or from your ISP? Easy way to find out, right click on network neigborhood and choose properties, locate the info on your IP; in linux (assuming you've still got another distro installed) run ifconfig as root.

If you have a generic IP it's probably from your hub. If that's the case, you might need to update /etc/resolv.conf to show your DNS server or your ISP's DNS server(s). To see if it's just a DNS problem, try pinging a known, working, IP such as this site's:
ping -c5 64.179.4.146

If it goes through, then you can usually count on it being a DNS problem. If not, you might need to look at whether or not the IP is getting defined:
ifconfig
Again, as root. Post up what you get returned.

Cool

Well, very strange- I got the network problem solved, not sure exactly how, but I re-ran netconfig and just used the generic localhost/localdomain names. I cant see how this would've solved the problem, but then again I dont see much.

As for the boot loading problem, I am trying to configure Lilo so that it installs the boot record to /dev/hdf2, but when I click apply it says

Quote:
Configuration NOT ok. LILO said:
LILO version 22.4.1 (test mode), Copyright (C) 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger
Development beyond version 21 Copyright (C) 1999-2002 John Coffman
Released 27-Jan-2003 and compiled at 19:45:45 on Mar 9 2003.
Warning: LBA32 addressing assumed
Reading boot sector from /dev/hdf2
Warning: /dev/hdf2 is not on the first disk
Using MENU secondary loader
Calling map_insert_data
Mapping message file /boot/message
Fatal: open /boot/message: No such file or directory
I really dont know much about Lilo and how it works, but basically I want to give the windows boot loader a boot file that points to /dev/hdf2 and Lilo. Any ideas at all?

Thanks. You guys are kings.

Why you just install LILO to the MBR? This way, Windows could be started without problems. I dont get the point, why you want feed the windows boot loader. With LILO you don't need it!
