8.1 install

A couple of years ago I tried to install SW and Zipslack from downloads but couldn't make them work.

I got SW8.1 from the LinuxFormat DVD in September 2002 and this week tried it again (to see if it would fix problems I am having).

It all went really well - I must have learnt a lot since 2 years ago, I mean more confident with cfdisk etc - and got the congrat message at the end. Rebooted and got root (same as 2 years ago, I think) login. Got in and read the 2 emails.

Where do I go from here ? - according to the SW online documentation when you've completed the setup that's it.

It's supposed to have KDE and Gnome but how do I get to them?

I suppose I am too used to installs like Mandrake, Suse, RH and (dare I say) Windows but at least there could be a hint in the docs?

Or have I missed it? Is the clue there staring me in the face?

Put me out of my misery

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I haven't tried it yet - am downloading MD9.1 and will try before installing that - or may stick with SW.

Out of interest though, what should I see when I type startx?

Once you haved logged in and typed startx, kde or gnome will start. Although most distros will boot straight into a gui unless you specify otherwise.
