3G Slackware 13 install

I have an old AMD K-6 350 MHz laptop with 96 MB of RAM and a 4 GB internal hard drive. I've used it for years with Slackware-I did have Slackware 11 on it with a 2.4.33 kernel before I did a fresh install of Slackware 13 and wiped the drive. I don't have the CPU power for KDE but it works nicely with the Fluxbox desktop.

The problem that I'm finding now is that I don't have enough disk space even by not installing KDE-it takes 3.7 GB which is all I have and then I don't have any space left for a user.

So, I figure I'll start over and re-install Slackware 13. Which package directories don't I need just for Fluxbox, PCMCIA wireless networking, USB support and CLI mp3 support (I like mplayer which is now included)? After the install I want to install wicd from the extra directory.

If you just exclude kde and kdei directories while installing, it will be pretty much all you need.

You can use SLiM as an alternative to kdm. It fits nicely with fluxbox.

How much space you have on / partition?

Why would you reinstall? Use current installation and delete obsolete packages.

Edit your /etc/slackpkg/mirrors and then run slackpkg update. My suggestion:

- remove "f" directory - FAQ and HOWTO's
- remove "k" directory - kernel source
- remove "e" directory - Emacs (of course if you don't use it)
- remove obsolete packages from "xap" directory i.e. XFCE
- remove obsolete packages from "l" directory i.e. Qt and Qt-related libs
- remove obsolete packages from "d" directory (it contains development stuff, but I highly doubt you need all of them)

In example, if you want to remove "k" directory, just run:

Code:
#slackpkg remove k
If you want to remove only few packages from some directory i.e. "xap":

Code:
#slackpkg remove xap
Then deselect all packages you *do not* want to remove.

Very important - be careful, since there is no dep solving, you could break some dependency. Remove only packages you are 100% sure.

I didn't know about slackpkg and tried that instead of a re-install. Slackpkg worked well and now I have 3.2 GB of 3.7 GB. Thanks for the help!

Is there any problem removing the "T" packages? Those are for TeX language utilities. In other words, does anything else in Slackware depend on Tex?

Thanks,

Thanks!

I worked for many years doing desktop publishing work (with Adobe products), so I've always thought that I'd like to start learning Tex and LaTex. But I haven't gotten around to it yet and the T series just sits there.
