2.6.x test kernel failed

i was told to install everything under the /testing dir, so i did (all alsa, all lvm, all kernel stuff) and now, when i rebooted, lilo freezes when booting the new linux. i cant boot my old 2.4 kernel because when i installed the 2.6 test kernel, it overwrote all my old 2.4 stuff.

now im booted via the rescue cd, and i dont have access to my cdrom drive to install the old kernel again.

how do i get my old 2.4 kernel back OR how do i fix this 2.6 kernel to boot?

if u did a clean install (just the once) then the old 2.4.x kernel is /boot/vmlinuz.old

Just remove .old from the files in boot and this will restore the old kernel.

Did u r edit and run lilo once u installed the kernel package (I have never installed a kernel that way so do not know how it works.)

The problem (i'm guessing) is that the 2.6.x kernel package probably needs a initial ramdisk in ur boot folder.

i mean im using the rescue cd initrd and the rescue cd kernel. basiaclly, the rescue cd is the life of my system now. the rescue cd is what i used to get off the lilo prompt which wouldnt boot, so it was basically a "back door"

did you reconfigure lilo after you installed the new kernel???

if you didn't you need too. (point to vmlinuz-2.6 or sth of the sort)

but if you did, and it's still failing, do what is said above

i got it back with the 2.4 kernel. i guess ill just try a custom 2.6 kernel install rather than the slackware packages. precompiled kernels have never worked for me.
