2.6 kernel video blanks

I have managed to recompile the 2.4.22 kernel with Athlon cpu etc and that works fine. Now I have tried to compile a 2.6.0 test 9 kernel. Starting with make oldconfig, I build the kernel, lilo etc and restart. The new kernel loads and mounts root, but when the screen resolution changes from 25 line mode, the screen goes blank. I hear the disk continuing to be accessed.
I have the nvidia driver running on this PC and expect problems with this, but I am not getting as afar as startx.

You are having trouble with the framebuffer you need this CONFIG_FB_VGA16 is not set and you should have the CONFIG_FB_VESA=y or boot with vga=normal if you want to look at my config it is here it is setup for an Athlon but you will have to make changes for your system. For the Nvidia you can get a patch for the driver at http://www.minion.de follow the instructions in the readme and you should be fine except that I have to modprobe -f nvidia to get it to load make sure you do not unselect the option in my config to allow that if you use it.

HappyTux's config works, so now I need to find time to figure out the difference.
Note that I did have those fonts compiled in.

I got the same proble, too. Now I have
# CONFIG_FB_VGA16 is not set
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
I tried compiling it 3 times with different options every time (fb_vga16=y,m;fb_vesa=no.. built-in console fonts.. etc..) but couldn't see any output neither.. I tried to boot with parameter: vga=normal and then I got output, but that is not satisfying.

Well, I used HappyTux's part of the config about the blank screen problem and it was fine. But there is another problem now.. This 2.6.0. acts like the word 'module' is completely foreign for it.. This is what it happens when I try insmod or lsmod (an ofcourse at boot when some modules must be loaded):
Code:
lsmod: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented
#modprobe 8139too
modprobe: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented
modprobe: Can't locate module 8139too
I have following lines in .config:
Code:
CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD=y
CONFIG_MODULE_FORCE_UNLOAD=y
CONFIG_OBSOLETE_MODPARM=y
CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=y
CONFIG_KMOD=y

you can compile any framebuffer, but make use vga console at boot via editing lilo.conf
and you have no problems.

Do you have module-init-tools installed and is the module actually on the system in the 2.6 modules directory? Also another thing I learned earlier this week while tracking down a lmsensors problem you need a /sys directory to mount the sysfs line that you should have in the /etc/fstab the line in mine:
Code:
## Needed for kernel 2.6
none            /sys            sysfs   defaults                0       0

What are these module-init-tools? I can't remember using them before.. and I sure know that I've never used sysfs Is this a new name of devpts?

The module-init-tools are the needed for the new way that modules are loaded also the modules now end in .ko. They /sys is where the devices connected on the system can now be accessed (located) like the old /proc. For the devpts I'm not sure. If you have never heard of the module-init-tools then you do not have them installed and should do so.
