i have a fresh install of slack 9.1 and im trying to upgrade it to the 2.6.1 stable kernel. Ive tried twice now, gone through the config process (the QT-basted make xconfig is nice) and then installed and compiled everything. When i update lilo, the system starts, but it cant load any modules and so i get no mouse(i have a USB one, i chose to compile HID and all that stuff into the kernel, i also included support for hotplug) no sound, no network, just a bare system. So i tried again, with the same results. My question is, does the stock 2.4.22 kernel(that comes with the distro) have a .config file that i can use with make oldconfig? It seems that way i would get a newer kernel with all the same goodies. I cant find the file, if it exists. Any help would be appreciated
in slackware your the .config file for hte bare.i kernel is in /boot, if u used a different kernel from the cd then the config is on the cd with the kernel. did u run make modules and make modules_install?
yeah i did make modules and make modules_install.. but it seems that all the modules i make dont get loaded, it gives me error messages about not being able to find them. ill try the old .config file and report back.
i think u should upgrade your modutils to module-init-tools, cause so much has changed from 2.4.x series..
the old tool cannot resolve dependencies and install modules..

ive done several recompiles, and im going to venture to say that i've made some progress. still nothing on the USB hotplug, but i managed to get the driver for my pro/1000 mt adapter working, so dmesg says that the link is active, full duplex, 100mbps, and all that, but i still have no network acess. i use DHCP, is there any way to turn that on with ifconfig? i know im close on this because the drivers for the card are loaded perfectly... ifconfig eth0 up doesnt work, any ideas?
That's what I did to start with slackware's base config to upgrade to 2.6.1 kernel (assumes you have /usr/src/linux linked to /usr/src/linux-2.6.1...if not then rm -f /usr/src/linux and then ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.1 /usr/src/linux)
Your problem is likely that it is a *fresh* install of Slack 9.1 instead of being a problem of your kernel configuration. Slack 9.1 does some things a bit differently. You have to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf. The good news is that you don't have to edit rc.inet1 any longer. If the module is loaded that should get you going
