2.4.23:BigMem causes Segmentation Fault and Kernel Panic!

Hi!

I am wondering if anybody else is facing this problem. When I switched on the 4Gb option, my system will tell me Segmentation Fault with all ther CPU registry and mem dump. The next command will go into Kernel Panic and the System freeze.

With the exact same kernel setting except with the BigMem switched off, everything works fine.

So therefore, my system is not using the full capacity of my system RAM.

Any idea?

hi!

I realise that it is not only a problem with 2.4.23 it is also a problem with 2.4.24 and 2.6.0.
Therefore I conclude that one of my memory module (the end piece) is faulty. SIGH. Will test with new memory module to confirm my hypothesis.

Correction my memory module is ok. I have just compiled 2.6.2 with BigMem on and it works fine.

I did turn off ACPI this time. Wonder whether that could be the cause.

I have not heard of ACPI interfering with the big memory option,
however many motherboards have issues with ACPI and the kernel's support.
To test your other kernels, you can just add "noacpi" to the boot parameters from lilo/grub boot prompt, whichever you use.
I suspect yours is one of the mobos with a little buggy acpi bios.

Congrats for finally getting it working, though.
