2.2 kernel in Slackware 9

Because of an ancient device, I'm trying to compile a 2.2. kernel in Slackware 9. The kernel compiles with lots of warnings, but it hangs at boot:

POSIX conformance testing by UNIFIX
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

Any help ? Any idea ? Thanks.

the device is literally so ancient that it can't be configured under the 2.4 kernels? i hate to be a person who suggests "just replace it" (the classic amurican way) for the equipment, but it may be time to let it go.

also, have you considered running an older version of slack that's known to be compatible with 2.2 kernels (like 7 or 7.1, i believe)? is this computer for interfacing w/ the internet too, or just for interfacing w/ this device? if this computer is firewalled/protected, then i'd just install an old version of slack and make sure nobody can access the computer directly.

what i'd do is make sure i had an ass-old computer to make the 2.2 kernel and put an old version of slack on (i think old slacks install the 2.2 kernel by default), then ethernet cable that to my faster computer and setup routing/firewalling through the new one. if you need help on routing/firewalling, let me know.

just my .02.

No way to replace the device; yes I can use 8.0 (which afaik is the last Slack distribution that came with a 2.2 kernel) and set up
the ipchains.

But anyway, it should not be a major problem to change the kernel version ?! Can someone give me a hint WHY I can't use the 2.2 kernel on Slack 9.0 ? What is the reason behind ?

Thanks !
