Upgrade from 10 to 10.1 (using the CD-ROM method
as described in UPGRADE.TXT) was not quite as bright
and shiny as one would hope it would be ...
Current status is that I can either have networking
running proper or X-Org working ...
If I use my own 2.4.29 kernel x-org freezes the screen
and I can't switch between X and consoles ... machine
is still ssh'able but won't shutdown or reboot.
If I use Pat's 2.4.29 I can use X (with a few flukes) but
the nfs module segfaults on me and penalises me with
a 3.5 minute boot-time ... (and no, I actually do use nfs,
turning it off is not an option ;}) ...
I'll keep you posted on how I'm going with the investigation ;)
I basically got 10.1 via swaret (although I was pretty "current" anyway) and a bit of
manual configuring. I think going to the 2.6.10 kernel vs. my old 2.6.7 kernel did
cause a few issues, but I think I have them all resolved now.
If things don't go real smooth keeping up with current, I might do a clean load when
11 comes out, but for now, I'm back to business. 10.1 is OK for me!
-tw
p.s. issues I had to resolve:
burning - had to reset permission - used k3b setup to do it
sound - that was an upgrading to 2.6.10 & alsa issue
and a dmesg error http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...03#post1467403
thats all I remember, so I voted ' a few quirks'
update:
found one more problem.. I'm stuck on this one!
update#2:
I know what it is now - need to recompile kernel.
I've got a 10.1 fresh install on a system I use as a media server -- no issues so far.
One interesting note -- I was getting a million insmod errors I suspect were related to hotplug on the first boot. After the first boot, however, nothing else came up. It was interesting.
I have done a fresh install and donīt notice any problems as of yet and I have compiled my own 2.6.8.1 kernel which seems to work without any problems. I am just off to try the 2.6.10 and see if it will work with the newer nvidia driver for my 5900xt
One other thing I just noticed last night is ImageMagick ...
The display command doesn't work proper anymore, when
I put
display -geometry 800x600 -size 800x600 *.jpg&
I'd expect JPEGs in that directory to be shrunk to
fit the window, but I get the panning view, and when
I close display it says:
Just a few quirks from me on a fresh install (the only type I do);
rdesktop not installed (I don't remember seeing that in the changelog)
When I install rdesktop 1.3.1 then Remote Desktop Connection complains about wanting version 1.3.2 (the latest version happens to be 1.3.1)
Some icons not there (PAN, xmms, a couple of others)
Can't get SuperKaramba to work properly (Liquid weather will not display)
Some java applets don't work (JAxe, etc...)
Other than that, pretty good (much better than my experience with SUSE 9.2)
Next quirk ... my manually compiled integration for S/MIME
and GPG support for Kmail got "lost in transition" ... I suppose
that's KDE's fault, though, and not Pat's... however, it will take
me a while to figure out what it's REALLY complaining about.
Wish I could change my own vote from "minor quirks" to
"slightly disgruntled" ... wish I hadn't done it :)

Gnashley, I removed glibc-solibs package when I saw both install the same shared libs.
I would think it is like openssl and openssl-solibs. If you don't want the full package with header files to compile programs, you just install *-solibs
Got my kernel issues sorted ... or at least partially, I can
now have nfs AND X running :) ... next quirk, though. When
in X Ctrl-Alt-F<n> is being ignored, I can't get to my
full-screen consoles. I'm really pissed off now.
