10.1 - Kernels?
I have downloaded the install disks 1 & 2 and just need to burn them to CD and I will be ready for a fresh install. From what I have read, it appears that the initial kernel choices on install are all 2.4.29 based and that if a 2.2.10 kernel is required then this is a post install "upgrade". Is this correct or will I be given the option of 2.6.10 upon install?
If it is the former, will I be able to configure lilo in the normal way (as I have with my 2.4 kernels) and choose to boot into either 2.4 or 2.6? The reason I ask is that I understand that there are some fundamental system structure issues that differ between 2.4 and 2.6 and it appears to me that there would have to be two separate structures to accomodate the different kernels. I assume that Slackware handles this at boot time and thereafter there are no issues?
Slackware was one of the first distribution with 2.6 kernels support (with
modules-init-tools already upgraded and some other utilities)
If you install 2.6.10 kernel from package, I think you need mkinitrd package too and
add initrd line in lilo.conf (It was like this for kernel-2.6.7 package but I don't know for
"post install "upgrade". Is this correct.. ?" - yes
" I be able to configure lilo ......... choose to boot into either 2.4 or 2.6? " Yes
".. I assume that Slackware handles this..?" Yes
The instructions for upgrading is found in:
Just what I needed to know :)
