TS proprietary sound card: snd-via82xx module, low sound; Installing HP DJ3845
 

Recently installed Slack 10.

I have an HP 3845 and need to download the hijps driver, has anyone that has completed this like to tell me their stories, suggestions?

I have a giga-byte motherboard with onboard sound, Slack does tell me that it can find it (unlike RH8) but when I play music as root I hear the music (and KDE system sounds, etc) very quietly. I've checked alsamixer and everything is at max, I've checked the speekers to make sure they work properly, that leads me to believe its the sound module. How exactly do I make changes to the module setting?

I have tried:
modprobe snd-via82xx dxs_option=x

but do I need to unload the module and then reload it with the new options? Do I need to modify rc.modules (besides when I figure out the correct settings).

alsamixer, alsactl store - maybe alsaconf - maybe your sound is weird.

yes on the scroll ball,

no on the sound card, everything you told me to do works, but I still have no change in the sound, I double checked the connections, even made sure the speakers worked, turned the volume way up, but still XMMS and all the others don't make a sound.

On the HP: what are hpiod and hpssd? They don't start when the hplip script tells them too.

BTW: If you are following along at home, for some reason my cursor keys now work (perhaps its a cookie thing).

Sorry, I don't know about the printer details - I don't have one. :)

As far as the sound, what exactly is the 'card', chipset, etc. What's lspci and lsmod say? You did unmute master and pcm with alsamixer? What'd alsaconf actually do? Have you checked the xmms plugin configuration? May be set to the wrong output. Does the sound work at all - any desktop you may have that may make noises? mpg321 or ogg123 are silent, too?

I don't really know but the more relevant information you give, the more people can help.

No, no sounds, not even with the test option in KDE system sounds. But the PC speaker beeps at me.

Everything seems to check out. Alsaconfig finds the card and doesn't output any errors.

Not familiar with that (I have SI7012 and i810 and ESS1868) but a quick google shows you need to have 'snd-via82xx', so you might try 'modprobe snd-via82xx'. Dunno, because we're still missing lsmod. Also not very familiar with KDE - may be an artsd and 'emulation' problem. But it's probably not an xmms output configuration problem, at least, if there's no sound in general. Maybe a KDE/Via person will help out.

I'm assuming the Slack /etc/modprobe.conf is /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, correct?

I see that snd-via82xx is already loaded, but I don't know what the '1' after it means. Reading from other sites makes me nervious that I'm going to be struggling with this for quite some time.

Through research I found:

I tired "modprobe snd-via82xx ac97_quirk=0" but no such luck.

After I messed around with the attributes to snd-via82xx the digit afterward turned into a '2'

Okay, so the story is:
While as root I can hear the music, but vaguely. As any other user I can't, but that's just because the flags for /dev/dsp0 are crw-rw--w-- Which is kind of a wierd combo, but probably because of some config thing I might have botched. I know how to fix those flags, I can take care of that later, right now I need to know how to manipulate the snd-via82xx module. I tried the ALSA website (specifically the snd-via82xx webpate) but it wasn't much help, little if any breakdown to specific models, and user posts are random at best. And playing around on my own, even looking at the output of modinfo only gave me value ranges, not anything more pertenant, like, how do I figure out what is considered 'strange hardware.'
