[TESTERS WANTED] Slint installers for Slackware 14.1 => LAST CALL

Hi there,

We need volunteers to test slint installers for Slackware-14.1 and Slackware64-14.1, especially the 64 bit version on real UEFI machines.

Both ISO images can be burnt either on a CD or an USB stick.

Instructions to make the bootable media under Linux and Windows are provided in the README files in the same directories.

Meanwhile, reviewing of some translations (e.g. in German, just completed) is still in process, so there probably remain typos, but main aim of requested tests is spotting possible remaining issues in booting and installation instead. Please report outcome in this thread.

Thanks in advance to all participants.

Both the sections of the README, on both http://slint.fr/testing/installers/slint-14.1/README and http://slint.fr/testing/installers/slint64-14.1/README, are headed "MAKING A BOOT MEDIA ON lINUX" (small L LINUX?).
The second section should be headed ""MAKING A BOOT MEDIA ON M$ wINDOWS" or similar.

Fixed, thanks.

A typo in syslinux.cfg prevented to launch the 64 bit installer in "no KMS" (nomodeset) mode in other languages than English.
A fixed installer has been uploaded.
Thanks to Serg Bormant.

Please continue testing while we prepare official introduction of slint for Slackware 14.1, and spread the word.

As the saying goes "more bugs fixed, less bugs to fix" ;)

Didier, I've just created a topic in the forum of a big brazilian Linux community (http://www.vivaolinux.com.br/) asking for testers.

SPACE/ENTER/DOWN/UP do not function as described in "little help on help".
How to use '/ - Forward search', '? - Backward search', 'n - Repeat last search (forward)'?

Hi cnv, welcome to LQ and thanks for your remark.

  • Origin of issue: in genuine Slackware installer, main 'dialog' box uses the --textbox option, that allow keys' usage as indicated on "little help on help". In slint instead we use the "--msgbox" option that does not provide the same features. I modified the French translation accordingly but forgot to inform other translators of this difference in behavior. My fault ;)
  • How to fix it: Either use the same --textbox option as in the genuine installer, or modify the English text to match the actual features of --msgbox, then request translators to update their translations accordingly. I'm inclined for the latter, as simpler and safer to implement: If we'd use the former, every line of text's length would have to be carefully checked to avoid need of horizontal scrolling. IMO search features in this dialog box (and the few others hosting lengthy texts), are nice to have but not a "must have" in the installer.
Comments appreciated.

As for me if we stick to "dialog --msgbox" we should modify the English text and adopt translation.
If we revert to "dialog --textbox" '/', '?', 'n' still doesn't help in Russian because keyboard switching in installer doesn't work at all and user cannot type search key in Russian.

So, we will adapt the English text. This will be done tomorrow, then we'll leave some time to update translations.

Other topic, I just uploaded updated installers for Slackware 14.1:
  • 32 bit version includes a fix in script SeTDOS: a bug could prevent making an accurate list of FAT and NTFS partitions. Thanks to Serg Bormant.
  • Date of build is now written in installer itself as SLINT_DATE, alongside a short README.TXT, instead of included in file name.
PS Now installers are built by a script very similar to the one that produces the DVD ISO, only most directories and files excluded from the tree. That should ease further maintenance. We could even consider using only one script for both usages.

I just uploaded updated installers in http://slint.fr/testing/installers

Changes in English text are made in help files for setup and pxesetup. I will wait till all complete translations be updated (that's done for Russian), then make the official release.

Slint 14.1 is released so I mark this thread as solved.
