Hi,
Seems that swapping kernel won't be necessary.
Back to home this evening I noticed something strange : no whistle after playing an album from Matthew Garrison
... so I tried other albums encoded in flac, mp3, etc... and the whistle came back
... so I searched what characteristic this particular Matthew Garrison album could have... and I found that it was encoded with a 48KHz sample rate, unlike most of my albums encoded in 44.1KHz ...
pacmd list-sinks told me that 48KHz happens to be the default sample rate of my brand new Hifi DAC. The internal soundcard DAC that I previously used has a 44.1KHz default sample rate, and no whistling : seems that I got it : then all I had to do is to find some documentation about Pulse Audio daemon configuration.
As far as I can tell (some testings will confirm it in any situations) : the following
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf config solves my problem :
Code:
default-sample-format = s16le
default-sample-rate = 48000
alternate-sample-rate = 96000
This experience was also an occasion for me to tweak pulseaudio for high fidelity playing, so you can add :
Code:
resample-method = src-sinc-best-quality
nice-level = -15
realtime-scheduling = yes
Maybe it will be useful to those who want to use their Slackware system to drive audiophile equipment
Thanks for your inputs
Cheers
JP
