[Slackware 14.0]: Which kernel will it ship...
 

As we all eagerly await the release of Slackware 14.0, which judging by current's changelog grows exponentially close, I wondered about the kernel it would release with.

Kernel 3.2.x makes a lot of sense as it became a de facto LTS kernel which Hutchings committed to maintaining. However, earlier this week, it was announced that 3.4.x is officially getting 2 years of support (https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/8/20/675)

Some interesting (to me) additions somewhere between 3.2 and 3.4 are: nfacct & rpfilter matches in netfilter, a new X32 ABI, direct booting by EFI firmware, a new teaming (aka bonding 2.0) network device, btrfs improvements, and support for newer GPUs.

It looks like it's going to be 3.2.28.

When I heard that 3.4 was also getting long-term support, I wanted to move to that one (even late in the game), but unfortunately ran into problems with it. The biggie that knocked it out of the running was that every few boots it would use the hpet clocksource instead of the tsc clocksource and would promptly oops. Strangely, booting with clocksource=hpet works just fine -- it's only when for whatever reason the kernel falls back to hpet (due to some kind of tsc failure, maybe?) that things go haywire. Anyway, I took it as a bad omen. Overall, 3.2.x has been good.

I'll be putting the 3.4.9 configs into the kernel source directory in case anyone wants to use them.

3.4.10 is out and there appear to be intel graphics related issues with it:

Looks like 3.4. is going through a bit of a rocky period, so all in all it looks like you made the right call. :)
