Question [common problem]Firefox does not play html5 audio :: details in topic

To be as helpful as possible, I have formatted my post like so:

Issue: Firefox plays no audio with html5. Flashplayer works fine.

Details: Have only tried on YouTube, but that is basically the only place I go to that I want html5.

System:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ow...NP365E5C-S01US

There is a custom install of slackware 14.0 (it is 32 bit, though this APU is built for 64 bit), and I really don't remember all of the packages that went into it. Ask, and I will see if they are installed.

Other Details: Well, I really want to get html5 to work just fine, so I can be alright as flash player has finally kicked the bucket.

Thanks for dealing with a not-so-competent user of slack.

Firefox's HTML5 implementation isn't finished yet. If you really want HTML5 on YouTube try either Firefox-nightly or Chrome.

Ok, makes a lot of sense. And, when the Firefox nightly says Linux (Intel), I hope that doesn't mean I have to have an intel processor? If you look at the link, it shows that this is using an AMD A8 4500.

I'm thinking it should be x86 and x86_64 instead of Intel. It is most likely just to indicate they aren't for ARM-based chips.

Alright thanks. I didn't think that would be the case. Still, that is kinda sad (but true).

Either I wasn't clear enough or I misunderstood your response...

The "Intel" builds on Mozilla's site are most likely for both AMD and Intel, just not for ARM-based computers like the Raspberry PI or a Chromebook. So, it should work fine on your machine

EDIT: Just tested it on my Athlon X2 6400+ and the nightly starts right up.

Works for me using the 35.0.1 binaries from Mozilla repackaged as Slackware packages, plus various GStreamer libs. I have gst-ffmpeg-0.10.13-x86_64-2_SBo, gst-plugins-bad-0.10.23-x86_64-3_SBo, gst-plugins-base-0.10.36-x86_64-2, gst-plugins-good-0.10.31-x86_64-3, gst-plugins-ugly-0.10.19-x86_64-2_SBo and gstreamer-0.10.36-x86_64-1 installed.

P.S. I tested with http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html

Solution to fix broken HTML5 MP3 and M4A Firefox audio in Ubuntu, Ubuntu-Gnome, Ubuntu-Mate and Lubuntu (and Linux Lite, Zorin, etc.)

Test sites: (1) https://html5test.com/
(2) http://hpr.dogphilosophy.net/test/
(3) http://www.gooplusplus.com/jukebox

SYNAPTIC - add gstreamer1.0-libav or gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

BTW, Xubuntu and Kubuntu Firefox HTML5 audio already works fine and plays MP3 and M4A files (instead of downloading).

@Gooplusplus: This is the Slackware forum. So advice with regards to Ubuntu is pretty much irrelevant.

Interestingly enough, Firefox ESR 31.6.0 on Slackware64 14.1 works fine with youtube html5. Caveat: HTML5 video must be encoded via open source codecs, i.e webm (VP8), ogg etc. h.264 video will not work.

Seamonkey is having the same troubles except it not only doesn't have sound, but HTML5 simply doesn't work at all except at youtube.

I assume, then, that you have not tried the HTML5 test links or tried the Ubuntu solution that worked?

Give adding gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly a try before dismissing the fix just because it is N.I.H.

The same solution worked in Crunchbang, a Debian distro.

Slackware probably has a related gstreamer fix.

@Gooplusplus scroll up and you will see that it is already working for me. Here is that post of mine again, just above yours:

Of course your suggestion worked in Ubuntu, Crunchbang and Debian for you as they are all based off the same thing, Debian. Slackware is not based on Debian (it predates it). It doesn't use APT, synaptic or .deb packages. Its package naming conventions and contents are often quite different.

For Slackware, the actually requirements are the Gstreamer packages already found in Slackware, plus gst-ffmpeg. That should allow you to play the full range of media. It certainly does for me.

By the way, we have had this topic before. From another thread:

Or maybe you could have read one post up and realised I already have this working. While you are at it, perhaps you should try a solution in Slackware before suggesting it on the Slackware forums?
