[BUG] xfig

Because Slackware 14.1 rc1 is coming soon I think I should change this upgrade request to a bug report.

The current xfig is rather unuseful because of some severe bugs such as some objects (sometimes > 90% of the objects in a figure) can be non-selectable, hence non-editable. Besides, there are other bug-fixes make xfig-3.2.5c a valuable update.

(Unfortunately I am incapable of editing the thread title, not can I deleted my previous thread about xfig.)

Can I second that. Xfig-3.2.4 is incorrigbly knackered with Unicode and needs several patches. Whoever has been compiling that obviously isn't a fan.

LC_ALL=C xfig

kinda works until it has to interface with the system in any way. i did try to update to 3.2.5 and found the patches online were fussy at best or impossible at worst. It needs a programmer to sort that.

The directory structure is also lacking. It has libraries - vast libraries of electronic parts for example. But finding an Electronic part in xfig is like this: you double click on 57 directories and end up in a directory with 100,000 small files :-//. Then the scroll bars at the side are knackered so you can't scroll down to see them or choose them.

EDIT: I'm stick my own old thread on this to give the bug people some idea of how it's going down

Maybe Ipe is better than xfig?

business_kid 09-13-2013 08:57 AM

Probably. Xfig development is stalled. It uses the Athena widget set :-(. What makes xfig worth it for me is that in most electronics schematic programs, the components are tiny, and a lot of the space around them is wasted. In xfig, they are big, with no space around then wasted, and so circuit sections can be better displayed in documents. It has a similarly large quantity of architectural symbols as electronic ones.

It does lack an integrated electronics package (schematic --> simulator -->pcb)
