Question startup script

Hello!

I am new to the linux world. I am using redhat 9 together with MySQL 4, J2sdk1.4.1_05, JDBD, Mod_JK, Apache and Tomcat and JSP.
Currently, only MySQL is running smoothly. I installed the J2sdk and set up JAVA_HOME in /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1_05. I can't set the path for JAVA_HOME. Every time I want to start CATALINA_HOME, I have to reset the JAVA_HOME path. When I set the path in one terminal, I'll close it. When I open a new one, it won't be there if I 'echo $JAVA_HOME. I can't find the path (/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1_05). I would like set it permanently with your help.
I think there's something to do with the startup script. I read about the ~/.bashrc. What is '~'? What is .bashrc_profile? I can't find it .
Please tell me what to do step by step. I can't continue if this path cannot be set.
On another matter, can I install redhat 9 by using an AMD2.4 processor?
Thank you very much.

~ is a shortcut to the users home directory.
Put JAVA_HOME in ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile like this:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1_05

You should give a little feedback when someone trys to help, instead of posting the same question all over the place.
