Maxtor 6Y120M0 not recognized by Red Hat Linux 9

My drive works fine with Windows XP, with an Intel D865GBF motherboard, whose BIOS recognizes this SATA drive without hesitation. Thus it seems that RH Linux 9 just isn't ready yet to use this relatively new SATA drive.
Does anyone know how to get my it working ? I am completely new to Linux and so do not know how to use it in the command mode yet, so any helpers will have to be "gentle with me".

Perhaps if you add (edit) some data to your message it will help others supply an answer.

Open a Terminal window.

Type: dmesg | grep ide

This will select all the IDE message lines from your boot log. Select the text and paste it into your Post after slecting the EDIT button

Also try: dmesg | grep max

and: dmesg | grep hd

Perhaps someone will see the problem in these lines.

prob is this is not an ide drive. are you using onboard sata or a pci controller card? if so, what card is it.

sorry, just google'd your motherboard. it has onboard sata. the 2.4 kernel does not support sata. however, you are in luck because you could use a 2.6 beta kernel which does support sata. the official 2.6 kernel should come out in the next month or so. after several months red hat 10 will be released which will support sata. for now, i would just buy an ide drive. it will still work with your mobo, assuming you haven't maxed out the ide ports with more than 3 other devices.

The support for SATA is supposed to be in the next release. Mandrake 9.2 should have it and Redhat's next release too. At least this is what I have read.

You may want to browse the Redhat site and see if they have a way around it in the meantime. Sorry.
