notepad-like program in linux?

hey, all. when i used to use only windows, i liked using notepad to write myself little reminders to save on my desktop. currently, all i have in linux for word processing are kword, open office, and kjots (which makes you put in a book name for everything and isn't exactly what i'm looking for). anybody have a suggestion for a really basic, low-end word processor that i can use for this purpose? i'm looking for something that opens really quickly so that i don't have to wait like i do for open office.

thanks a lot.

Oh boy If you are looking for a text editor, Linux will be a paradise for you . hehe. Here are some suggestions:

X editors

Kedit (KDE).
Gedit (Gnome).
Gnotepad.
Kate (KDE).
KWrite (KDE).
Nedit.
Vim.
Xemacs.
Xcoral.
Nvi.
Ozeditor.
NortenCaptain (this is a file manager with an editor too)

Command Line editors

Pico (my favorite of them all)
mcedit (midnight commander is a file manager and editor too )
Vim.
Emacs.
Nano
joe.
Fte.
Jed.
CoolEdit.

And there might be a lot more
