How do you connect to a site with anonymous ftp? I am trying to download the dante socks client but it says I don't have access. How do I get it to let me in and browse the folders to download the software? Also, once I download it how do I install it?
This all depends on if the site allows anonymous ftp. If you browse to the site: ftp://sitename and it prompts for a password, then most likely they disabled anonymous FTP'ing.. and you'll need to contact them for assistance.
The username usually is anonymous and the password is ur email address (gets added to a log file). You may want to get a good linux/unix book. They will probally have a section for installing.
If it allows anonymous ftp, you would type "anonymous" for the username, and your email for password, i'm not sure why...if there is no username named anonymous, then you can't download it from that specific ftp site
EDIT
wow, 2 people posted before me, all 2 min apart...gotter be quicker next time...grr

It says "could not enter directory" whatever that means. I'm just trying to download dante socks client so I can use that instead of the manual proxy configuration.
So if your connected already but your trying to enter a directory on their server, then getting that error, then well either the directory no longer exists maybe or being anonymous you don't have permissions to access it.
Care to give out the actual FTP server and path your trying to access?
It appears I can download about anything from that ftp site. What is the exact file your trying to download? I can download and place on my server for download if you want.
Strange. I wonder why I couldn't get in. Could it be my proxy settings? I have ftp://my proxy server and port 21 setup for that. Did you need a username/password to get in?
No username and password required for me as it appeared to allow me to browse and download about anything in that directory. Again, if you give me the exact file you wanted, I could place on my server for download for you. Or have you tried searching for an alternative site for download?
I'm sorry, I didn't know that installing and configuring dante was the same as anonymous ftp downloading. In any event I need help installing and configuring dante. I cannot even download updates to mandrake without socks5 proxy server access to the internet.
