Ok, I just upgraded my kernel to the new 2.4.21 to avoid the ptrace vulnerability, and now my log are filled with this :
Jul 10 21:16:17 Elf kernel: i8253 count too high! resetting..

Jul 10 21:25:21 Elf kernel: i8253 count too high! resetting..
pretty annoying, really. I searched on google, it seems to be a common error, especially about my hardware (MB : A7A266). Since everything was working perfectly well with 2.4.20, I don't think there is an hardware failure in cause.
What can be the problem? A kernel bug?
Can it be fixed?
hum well... I have edited the kernel code to stop the logging of that thing, my log are no longer full of that crap, however there still a bug in the kernel... should I bug report to kernel.org?
something is bad about our motherboard (A7A266) I guess.
for my part, I edited the kernel code so I no longer get stupid msg in my log, but sometime I lost time on my clock.
sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am getting the same i8253 error repeatedly. I'm running RedHat 9 on an old Gigabyte GA-5AA and an AMD K6-2/500. I was hoping one of you guys had found some hard data on it, since I'm a Linux newb and don't know how to troubleshoot it.
oh man, I am having the same prob. It occurs when pcmcia services are starting up, right?? I am a NEW newbie and am at a loss. I am about to recompile my kernel and then apply acpi and pcmcia patches cause I don't know what else to do. anyone??
well, the only solution I found yet is too edit kernel code and to add some comment to avoid the print out of the bug... but maybe it is a bit too deep
Well I am getting this error every few secconds (running my own compiled kernel 2.4.22 but this happens in allmost every distro).
Is there any solution jet?
