my Redhat 9 seems v.slow?

hi i am a newbie using redhat 9, but it seems really slow doing things like loading images in mozilla and just in general, my laptop is fast(ish) it has about 250 ram and a P4 processor. windows 2000 thats on the other partition is really fast but redhat is clunky, any ideas??????

is your only problem with mozilla running slow?

no mozzila and everything else - loading times etc

Are you using an nVidia card? If so get the official drivers.

also stop all services that you dont need ftp apache etc

I am a newbie too. I recently migrated to RH9 on my old IBM thinkpad 600X which has 398MB ram + 650Mhz CPU. Even I enjoy Linux pretty much but I found that loading programs, starting up are pretty slow on my laptop eg. Mozilla takes some 20sec to start, OpenOffice is also sluggish. Is there anyway that I can optimise the speed of the Linux? Re-complie the Kernel is the answer? BTW, mouse movement also is pretty slow for my liking (even after adjusting the mouse setting), it just not as responsive as I want it to be. Besides, Linux also take my SpeedStep as a 500 mhz CPU, does anyone know how to tweak it?

I have tried RH9 and it is slower than both SuSE 8.2 and MDK 9.1

sad, but true...when starting out, RH9 is slower...i would know, im running it right now. although its barely noticeable on the system i got, its at least a million times more stable than XP =P

REcently, i've come more "to terms" with the programs i need running and what i dont. When rh starts it automatically fires up LOTS of stuff that just runs in the background...ftp, httpd, mysql, apache, ssh, and other things that depend on the user (compilers and libraries and stuff)

however, rh 8+ use both KDE and GNOME apps...while i'm sure if this is common, i would assume it could lead to slower speeds

This is odd. RH9 should feel pretty responsive. I'm going to look into this, there's something very strange going on here with some people - FWIW I use SuSE and Redhat, they are both similar in speed (as you might expect)

Yeah RH9 seems very slow for me too, and im getting some strange behavior of nautilus: sometimes it crashes ...
I have a Pentium4 - 2gHz with 512 Ram it sholdnt be slow ...

I turned of some of the services that start with RH9 but it didnt made any difference...

I suggest for all of you using RH9 to change, i heard good things about ¨conectiva linux¨ (seems really fast !!!) or maybe SuSE, but i dont know where to download the installations, im looking for it now ...

what about slackware is it good ?

By "hardware dump" I just meant lots of info on what hardware you're running.
