Apache Problem

I am doing my final project for an introductory course in Linux Administration. I am stuck trying to complete this task.

Configure apache for a company's main web page.

Create a small web page as a place holder for the main page.

You also need to create virtual host web pages for www.newsite.com and www.nuthersite.com with place holder web pages for each.

I have created the two index.html - virtual host web pages in thier own directories under /var/www. I have added them with the computers ip under /etc/hosts. I made virtual host entries in httpd.conf for each and for the /var/www/html.
But I am still missing something. When I access the ip address or URL from another computer or my own browser I only see the main page- maybe I have to uncomment or comment part of the httpd.conf or is there a step that I missing entirely. If anyone one could point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.
