Installing video card drivers?


Hey all im new to linux,

Im using mandrake linux 10.1 and im trying to install Nvidia drivers, it comes in a .run file but i have no idea how to install this.. i really wanna learn linux and use it as much as possible but i have no idea how to even install programs

Well i tried using the "sh" command and the file name but when i did it it says i need to do it as a root? what does that mean?

frst open a konsole.
2- find the file
e.g: if in ~/Download, do #cd ~/Download
3- do # ls -o
look a the permission ( make sure it iis executable)
e.g -rw-r--r-- 1 *** 378 2005-10-05 00:37 ****(is notexec)
-rwxr--r-- 1 *** 378 2005-10-05 00:37 ***** ( is)
if its not, do # chmod 755 "filename"
then switch to root (su)
then :
# ./"filename"

note.
# just mean commandline do not type #
"filename" means change for the appropriate filename without the ""

most file u do not execute as root but nvidia u need to
also shutdown X other wise it wont work


hope i did not confuse u too much

you kinda did lol do you have aim or nething, mines whitecracka2k4 im me on that or summin

New problem, i got x shutdown and what not but now it says something about a kernal... i tried doing the online download but it dident work... any ideas?

please post the specific error message that you are receiving about the Kernel.

it says it cant find the kernal or something or its not compatible.. and it trys to download one from nvidia but theres nothing on there

You need to install the kernel-sources in order to build nvidia drivers. The kernel sources, as far as I know, is not shipped with Mandrake. You need to go to Mandrake homepage and grab the kernel-source.rpm and install it first. I wrote this a while ago and despite my poor English, should help a little bit:

Well i figure i need an updater kernal.. i got the latest one only prob is i dunno how to install it

it says i have 2.6.8.1-12mdk when i do the command to see what kernel i have
