3 Questions

Hi there, just got Slackware 8.1 up and running and so far I have 3 questions:

1. I'm using some of the options set in XF86Config that "Anaconda" configured when I was running Redhat 8.0 (eeww). The screen was perfect then, but now it's too big. I have to make the mouse 'push' over to see more of the screen. Do I have to change refresh rates???

2. How can I go about configuring my sound card? Every time I log in, KDE tells me it can't open my sound device. I'm using a SoundBlaster Live!.

3. How can I make KDE start up automatically once logged in? I thought I read something about inet levels, but I'm not sure. I just don't want to bother with having to hit startx after logging in.

1. You will need to disable virtual screens in your XF86Config file. Its where the size of the desktop is larger than the actual screen.
Either that or just run xf86config to setup X.

2. Edit your /etc/rc.d/modules.conf file and uncomment out the emu10k module under the sound section.
Then chmod 666 /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer*

3. Edit your /etc/inittab file to start automatically in runlevel 4.

All these questions have been answered many times before and especially being Slackware specific in the Slackware forum. A simple search would have found all of these for you.

Okay thanks, I got the init to do runlevel 4, but the other two stump me. I'm still pretty new to Linux. I did use xf86config to setup X and then I replaced video card names, etc. with the ones specified by Anaconda because my video card isn't in the database. After looking through /etc/X11/XF86Config, I still don't see anything with virtual screens. Could someone clear this up?

My sound is still dead. Being a n00b, I do not know what is meant by uncommenting a line. I found a line specifying emu10k in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules (because there is no /etc/rc.d/modules.conf) and removed it from the file and I chmodded those files as well, but I still get the same error. It can't open the driver and something about /dev/dsp (I should have written the error down).

Oops.. yeah sorry, the files is rc.modules.. I was thinking of other things..

By uncommenting, I mean when you were looking at that file, in front of that line that represents the emu10k, there is a hash mark in front of it.. ##### <----- Those thingy's.. which probably looks like this on that line:

#/sbin/modprobe emu10k

Remove that # in front of the line...

And about the editing of the XF86Config, you can't just copy over things like that. One system varies from the next and your old Redhat system could have had drivers that your Slack system doesn't have. Probably one reason your getting the larger virtual screen.

I would suggest going to www.xfree86.org and reading up on their docs for more information, also depending on what type of card you have which hasn't been mentioned might be of some help as well..

Ooo... now I feel stupid. Since I removed the lines, I can't remember what they were. Makes me wish I had backed that file up. Can you tell me what the line before it was? It should have been like #Support for....: or something like that. Sorry and thanks.

If you deleted the lines, you only need that one I mentioned before, cause the other one is only describing what module it is and it wont be read anyways since it still would have the # in front of it..

I have one last question because something weird happened to me minutes ago. I installed Gaim and made a shortcut for it. When I clicked on it, the whole screen turned from kde to gnome and it gave me errors saying it needed support for gnome or something. The desktop remained kde, but the taskbar and everything is gnome. If I hit the hide menu button, the kde bar is underneath! What's going on? If I click on the windows in the gnome bar (called KWin I think) everything disappears. I just want kde, so how can I remove the gnome bar?
P.S. I searched and found nothing

I forgot the name of it specifically but try seeing what processes are running and see if you see any gnome-applet or anything associated with gnome running.. and kill it.

Maybe post your output of ps -aux and I might be able to tell from there ?

I tried killing all the processes, but it didn't seem to work. Instead, I logged in as root and deleted that user, then re-added it. That fixed that.

Then I upgraded my X server from 4.2.0 to 4.2.1 and redid the configuration. Nothing worked so out of desperation I just replaced the XFree86Config file with the one I saved from my RedHat 8.0 Config file, but left out anything specific to my system like the font server since RedHat uses a different. So now my screen works

Now my last problem is still sound. I did what you said, but the error remains. Here's that portion of my modules file:

I still get the same error upon starting X that says "Error while initializing sound driver. Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)."

Anymore ideas??

Well its not detecting a /dev/dsp which is kind of needed.

What is your output of dmesg ? And also the output of ls -al /dev/dsp* ?

If you can give us the out put of lspci -vv ?

That is strange. It detects the card with the lspci command but your dmesg doesn't indicate a thing about it.

On my Slack 8.1 box, I have a Soundblaster Live and this is my output in my dmesg which yours should show something similiar:
