Getting higher resolutions with Xorg

I'm having trouble getting higher resolutions in X. I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum since it could be any number of issues (video card, xorg, LFS) but since I'm building an LFS 6.1 I thought I'd start here.

I have X up and running using Xorg. I even have Fluxbox now installed and have been playing with MPlayer. The problem is that I can't get a resolution above 640x480. I was able to get X to start in 24-bit depth by adding "DefaultDepth 24" to my screen entry. I tried adding to the 24-bit depth entry:

Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

and even tried just "1280x1024" but it keeps starting in VGA.

Also, Xorg -configure worked until I installed nvidia's kernel module. The module loads properly at boot and manually using modprobe. X still starts properly, as well. But, when I try Xorg -configure, it fails and reports that the nvidia module couldn't be loaded. It also lists the available video drivers and nvidia is listed (twice.)

I also noticed that there are no modelines in xorg.conf from when X -configure did work. I saw in docs and posts I found on google that modelines aren't really necessary anymore with a few exceptions since Xorg uses standard VESA modes. Is my setup one of the exceptions? Where can I get the necessary modelines?

I have an nvidia Ti 4200 and a Gateway EV910 monitor.

Check if you have something like this in the Monitor section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Monitor"
.... (your values)....
HorizSync 30-110
VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection

Those values are for my own 19" CRT monitor. Check your monitor documentation for the correct values.

After you have done this, you should add something like this to your Screen section:

Section "Screen"
... (your values)...
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection
....(your values)...
EndSection

This is just to get you started with a default 1280x1024 resolution. Should work, since it works for me. =)

Thanks for the tip. I did exactly what you recommended and it worked! Though I came across the solution whilst googlin' around before I remembered to check back here, I appreciate the help. I found the monitor frequencies on the gateway support page.

Anyway, the solution posted here might help someone else.
