HP Pavilion zd8224ea with Samsung TS-L532M CD/DVD Unit
Hi!
I have a HP Pavilion zd8224ea (zd8000) with Samsung TS-L532M CD/DVD Unit.
After installing and upgrading to the latest kernel I (still) have this error message appearing every third second in /var/log/messages:
Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: Error: Not ready -- (Sense key=0x02)
Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: Incompatible medium installed -- (asc=0x30, ascq=0x00)
Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet command was:
Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
I also have this problem with an HP DV4000 series laptop. It has the same dvd drive ( TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L532M), and likewise i get these same errors when booting. When using a 2.6.10 series kernel the problem didn't present itself, so it must be recently manifested in a newer kernel. Anyone who might have a solution to this problem, please help!
to the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf and it stopped the kernel mesages at 3 second intervals. However, inserting a cd or dvd no results in multiple mounts? that is, it will mount /dev/scdx for x=1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7? It seems harmless, but can anyone explain what happens?
I saw some posts indicating that this is not a kernel problem, but rather a poor app. After probing around for what was using /dev/hdb (with fuser -a /dev/hdb and various ps), I was still stumped. On a long shot, I tried killing the hald (haldeamon) and .... no more error! I have, of course, lost some hotplug features, but I do not care and running a command after hooking my camera up, for example, seems preferable to an ever spinning disk (hence fan!).
I am still interested in another work around. Perhaps a bug report to the hald folks is in order?
