I've been thinking of trying Linux seriously for some time. I have used Knoppix, Mandrake and Atmission live CDs, as well as repeatedly trying to run Suse 9.2 from Live with no luck. So far, I've been very impressed with the opportunities for customisation and the speed of Linux- even when it's running off a CD!! So.... what is the best distro that would allow me to use:
Wi fi
bluetooth
Use a usb broadband modem (Bt voyager)
Play DVDs
Write Cds and DVDs- including the ability to make DVD+RW act as an additional hard drive (drag'n'drop etc).
My specs are:
Toshiba M30x 129
60 GB HDD; 512 ram: 64 mb Ati Mobility Radeon 9700; Dvd +/- r/w; 3 USB; mini firewire; NO FLOPPY; built in wi-fi. I also use an external cd-rw/dvd drive through USB for watching Region 1 movies so obviously would need that to work too. Oh, and preferably relatively simple installation procedures. I'm not very confident with a great deal of command line work at this point.
This is about personal preference. Since you have tried Mandrake, Knoppix and Suse, why not pick the one you liked the most. As for Suse, it won't install from the Live CD, the Live CD is just a demo of the full disro.
as previously posted it's all about choice, I tried several ditros, mandrake, debian, fedora, suse before settling on mandrake as it was the easiest for me to set up for my wife (totally non-computer literate). I have had no probs doing the things you mentioned although you may have "fun" setting up you bt voyager adsl modem . The drivers are available but it is a pain to set up. I just binned it and went for a "proper" adsl router.
If you really must keep it go here: eciadsl
you'll find everything you need.
