how to change the computer name?

I installed FC3 and the installer automatically choose a name for my computer in an "unreadable" format, like this: user_name@S0106000d610e02fd

How to change that name?

Try editing /etc/hosts file (need to be root) eg:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
1.2.3.4 name.subnet.net name

use /sbin/ifconfig to get the replacement for 1.2.3.4 ie eth0 inet address.
You'll need to reboot.

Or as root type hostname (whatever you want the name to be) then press enter.

Your computer name is in the /etc/sysconfig/network file (HOSTNAME=xxxx).

After editing the /etc/sysconfig/networking file, no need to restart the computer, use /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

the hostname command will change your /etc/HOSTNAME file
You have to change your /etc/hosts

Make all these changes before to reboot and in the same terminal. This to avoid problems that may occur with the X server.

In Redhat 9 for example, I recommand you use redhat-config-network that will be easier to use (than to edit files) and make changes you may have forgotten (/etc/dommainname,...).
