Unlocking /root file

Using libranet 2.8.1 (kernel 2.4.25) I can't as SU get into my root file or var etc. It tells me that permission is denied. When I look at the file system in say Konqueror, it shows my root file with a lock on it. If I go into properties no permissions available.

root@GNULinux01:/# ls -l
total 68
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 2128 Mar 30 2004 bin
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 408 Mar 30 2004 boot
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Aug 14 2003 cdrom
drwxr-xr-x 13 root root 44448 Jan 15 08:38 dev
drwxr-xr-x 113 root root 6976 Jan 15 10:13 etc
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Aug 14 2003 floppy
drwxrwsr-x 3 root staff 72 Mar 30 2004 home
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Aug 14 2003 initrd
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 3664 Apr 27 2004 lib
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Feb 15 2003 mnt
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Aug 14 2003 opt
dr-xr-xr-x 88 root root 0 Jan 15 03:37 proc
drwxr-x--- 21 root root 1200 Jan 13 07:28 root
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3648 Apr 4 2004 sbin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Jan 20 2004 sys
drwxrwxrwt 9 root root 360 Jan 15 10:13 tmp
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 360 Aug 13 2003 usr
drwxr-xr-x 15 root root 360 Mar 30 2004 var

root@GNULinux01:/home/peterhin# cd /
root@GNULinux01:/# /var/log/messages
bash: /var/log/messages: Permission denied

How do I unlock my root file, so that I may use it again as SU.?

Let me add that I also have the problem of once in Console I get a continuous message "SRO: CDR not ready, Make sure there is a disk in the drive." The only wat I can log into Console is to put a cd into the drive. Now I am not sure if this problem is related or not, other tna I tried to look at my "/var/log/messages" to see if there was anything that might be giving me this problem.

i don't see an error anywhere. that messages error is just because you are trying to "run" a text file, which makes no sense.
