So if you do install the driver, it freezes, and if you dont install the driver it freezes.

than what makes you think it is the driver that causes it to freeze ?

give as much information as you can.
how bad is the freeze ? can you still ctrl+alt+F1 into a command line envoironment ?

how did you install the driver ?
how long after the driver is loaded does the freez happen ?

did any error messages apear ?

does the driver correclt load and show up in "lsmod"

did you correctly edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file ?
what changes did you make ?

after the machine has booted, open a command line and run "lsmod" does one of the lines start with nvidia ?

also, look for a line starting with rivafb (this shouldnt be there)

open up the xorg.conf file, and post it here.
