some GRUB users think they have an error with grub whereas it is more likely they had the following distros and dual boot to windows with a kernel 2.6 series

SOLUTIONS AS SUGGESTED BY thom, KohlyKohl AND OTHERS RATHER THAN ABOVE LINKS
1) Not yet installed?
Use a linux cd with partition tool that is not of those distros to partition your system ready for your new suse, FC2 or MDK.
Alternatively you can use independent tools from the Knoppix cd or the rescuecd ...sysresccd that include fdisk, cfdisk and a graphical tool QTPARTED.
2) Already installed?
KohlyKohl suggests going into bios and changing it to LBA mode assuming a modern bios.
He also suggests it is more of a kernel 2.6 bug rather than a particular distro.
NEW DISTRO USERS NOTE
I am using Mdk 10.1 and it does not like the syntax of
kernel /boot/vmlinuz etc in my /boot/grub/menu.lst file
where /boot is the issue so remove it and use
kernel /vmlinuz etc
For all users unsure which works create 2 entries one with and one WITHOUT the /boot pathway to see what works.
PS
I installed Mdk 10.1 and w98 on my new sata drive this way
1) KNOPPIX cd command
cfdisk /dev/sda to partition it as a scsi drive using kernel 2.4
2) Load Mdk and allow it to use the existing partitions but rename the mount points and use Mdk to format them
3) stop the process b4 install ......reboot w98 and install
4) restart Mdk and overwrite the mbr and install the Mdk
