authorization denied - printer adjustment

i use one single password for everything on my system. if there might be one that differs, i have another standard-password. but i don't think there were two different passwords - but now i tried to adjust my printer to "economy / draft" because it suddenly started to print in extremely slow mode again. i had it adjusted to economy before, too.

but for no apparent reason i am not allowed to enter it, the password and / or username have no authorization. how come this? i adjusted the printer two days ago without the slightest problem. it is only me using the pc.

Enter the following command as root;

# lppasswd -g sys -a root

i tried and still lack admittance, though coming in to both yast and sax2. what does this command do?
an additional problem occured: the printer doesn't print anymore, being in "inactivity mode (taking orders)". where do i unlock it again?

That command allows you to logon to CUPS as root. YaST should use your root passowrd.

what was cups again? when i tried the command it happened nothing, not even an error message.

CUPS - Common Unix Printing System. It's the printer subsystem that YaST talks to to configure your printer. Accessible through YaST printer configuration or through a web browser.

still, nothing works. from the controllcentre i get a new message: "unknown user ungua"... it is filled out already when i enter it and i have no idea, what name else to use. i really need my printer... i still have an advice how to set up my system all new, if the printer doesn't work, it may accelerate the process that i don't really have the time for now...

SuSE allows you to access the browser setup menu for CUPS but you will not be allowed to log in as root. SuSE says it is a security problem with CUPS but every other distro can do it so you can draw your own conclusions.

The command that Harryc shows us may work. I don't know. Never tried it. I had to configure my printer from the command line using instructions from the SuSE website. YaST/SaX2 does not configure all printers automatically and they admit this fact. Do a search on their website for your printer and see it you can find any help. You may be using one of the problem printers.
