which file has the display properties in Linux

hi there,

I need the file which stores all the information regarding the display properties,
for different distributions.
for instance, in Redhat 9.0,
where does the application redhat-config-xfree86 stores its values, such as,
Monitor Type (Model),
DPI information,
Video card type,
Driver,
Resolution,
Color Depth,
Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates etc...

does redhat-config-xfree86 stores all its settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config?
I need to extract the display settings and other display related details.
extracting from /etc/X11/XF86Config will be very tough.
Is there any alternative method to get all the display details.
Is there any system call to retrieve those display settings.

Honestly I'm not quite sure if the program that you're using only stores in the XF86Config, although I find it likely .

About the extracting, that shouldn't be to hard to do, could you be a bit more specific, would you like to have te details is a text file?

If so, than you could for instance try:

cat /etc/X11/XF86Config | grep <detail>  > <filetowriteto>

this would put lines which contain the <detail> word(s), into a file

Personaly I wouldn't do it in C.

Perhaps you can try perl or python?

Both not to difficult languages, You could make the filthering of the file better by using regular expressions in perl.

I checked the file 'n it is the most suitable file.
redhat-config-xfree86 stores all its settings in the same file u said.
as for as the Language to use, this project is in C, which is already half way.
the core idea, is to collect all the information regarding a pc 'n its peripherals, under Linux.
so I have to do it in C. :-) that's not a problem.
